Met Costume Gala: Red Carpet
Held
on May 4th at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York
City. The annual celebration to honor couture fashion
brought out mega stars: Victoria Beckham,
Eva Longoria Parker and hubby Tony Parker,
JT and Jessica Biel, Kate Hudson, Ann Hathaway, Kate Moss,
Olsen Sisters, designers Marc
Jacobs and Diane von Furstenburg, and many
others. Bravo to the fashion risk-takers, but not all paid
off. Take a look at who made this year's "So
Fresh" and "Hot Mess" list.
SO
FRESH
Heidi
Klum with Gilles Mendel: With
the designer and unbelievably stunning in J.
Mendel. Fabulous peek-a-boo blues, lovely sweetheart neckline, and empire
waistline is super flattering on this soon-to-be Mommy. Just
glowing with beautiful, understated hair and
makeup.
Ciara:
R & B artist turned Red
Carpet hottie!!! Lovin' her in this super sexy, classic yet
modern Pucci. Perfect makeup and sleek updo highlights her gorgeous face.
Chanel
Iman: Super model and
runway favorite in Zac Posen.
Daring, feminine, and fabulously edgy... So FRESH from
head-to-toe!!!
Emmy
Rossum: In a metallic
gunmetal gown by Carolina Herrera.
Stunning high neckline and fantastic fishtail hem. Would
have loved a jeweled belt and supersized cocktail ring, but the
dress was amazing!
HOT
MESS
Madonna:
Queen Madge turns fashion
victim in Louis Vuitton.
Totally bizarre!!!! It's Rambo channeling Bjork.
What the hey???
Leighton
Meester: Gossip Girl
darlingalso in Louis
Vuitton. Minus the paisley leggings, this
ensemble may have worked. Together, it was all too busy and
more Cirque Du Soleil than Gala fabulous.

the Stylist
Q:
I've been saving for a very expensive designer handbag.
It's the perfect size and color, but I'm still not sure if I
should buy it. Do you think it's worth it?
Bev
A:
When it comes to handbags... I feel it should never be
just about the label. There are plenty of gorgeous bags
available in a range of price points. Certainly, designer
handbags are beautiful, but they're also very pricey.
Whether it's $500 or priced well beyond... If you absolutely
love it and it's within your budget, then definitely get
it!!! However, you'll want something that's worth
the
investment; one you will love for years to come. Remember,
the more you use it, the more value you're getting for the
money. I would also take into consideration the style,
fabric, and color of the handbag. "It" styles may be hot for
only a season; so choose carefully. Rather than
splurging on a trendy bag, I would opt for something classic in a neutral
color. Brown, taupe, tan, and black leather bags are all amazingly
versatile and super durable. Love this season's brightly
colored versions, but I would stick to a more moderate price
point.
They're
fabulously oversized and everything flirty... For as long as
I can remember, I've always been a lover of big earrings.
Worn with your hair pulled back or loose and flowy, they have a
way of perfectly draping and highlighting your face. Chandelier
styles adorned with gemstones are especially beautiful. I
love how they brighten even the fairest of complexions. Not
used to going large? At least consider them for their ultra
slimming benefits. Girls...you know the rule.
Note:
Oversized styles range from 3"-5". Choose one that's
proportionate to your face and height; so not to
overpower.
Q:
Everyone is wearing bright colors this season.
I'm a redhead with really fair skin. Will these colors work
for me?
Thanks! Joss
A:
It's difficult to give you a definitive answer without
actually meeting or seeing a photo of you. When it comes to determining
your best colors, it's important to take into consideration your
hair and eye color as well as skin tone. This thorough
process, also known as a "color analysis," is a service
offered by many image and wardrobe consultants. Your
consultant will help determine your "season,"
and break down your color chart. However, that said, I would suggest just trying it
on. If it looks good...go for it. Trust your instincts; you'll
know. Whether you're a redhead, brunette, blonde or
have jet black hair; with fair
or olive-skin, bright colors are
amazingly flattering. It's one hot trend worthy of a try.
Note:
Think Marcia Cross of
Desperate Housewives. Brights are the perfect compliment to
her porcelain skin and red hair.
Try bold yellows, greens,
and blues.

Eco-Friendly
Style: Loomstate for Target
HAPPY
EARTH DAY!!! Do your part to support Mother Earth with the
simply eco- friendly collection from Loomstate
for Target. Yes, they did it again.
Designer, Rogan Gregory and Scott McKinley Hahn are back with a
casually chic line designed with the environment in mind.
Pieces such as the knit shirt dress and graphic tees are super
soft, and made of 100% certified organic cotton. Prices
range from $14.99-$44.99
Some
prefer the buttoned up versions, but I'm really loving the loose
jersey vests. The soft, fluid drape gives it such an easy,
chic look. Girls, get your tan on this Summer! Pair it
with a graphic tee or tank, little shorts or with fabulous skinny
denim. Pile on the chunky bangles, add a fedora, flat
sandals or gladiators...so many ways to style it!!!!! A
fantastic wardrobe addition.
Q:
My son is getting married in June, and I still don't have a dress
for the wedding. The Mother-of-the-Bride is wearing a
long gown, but I would prefer to go shorter. I'm in my early
50's and want a style that's elegant, but not entirely
traditional. Please help! Teresa
A:
I would suggest keeping it simple and sophisticated in a classic
sheath. This style is flattering on most, and the silhouette
is just timeless. Evocative of the classic Jackie O sheath,
the portrait neckline on this Maggy
London keeps it demure while cascading drape adds a
modern touch. Wispy flutter sleeves and stunning layers of
iridescent taffeta gives this Adrianna
Papell sheath a wonderfully romantic feel; perfectly
age appropriate and just the style for today's Mother-of-the-Groom.

Q:
I'm going to Vegas in a few weeks and need to find a couple
dresses. Something to wear to the clubs that's under
$250. Can you help? Tiffany
A:
Hitting the party scene in Vegas can only mean...legs, legs,
legs, and a whole lotta curves. So be prepared to show off a
little more skin than usual. For your night out, I would
suggest a fabulous black or bright hot one-shoulder mini
dress. Jersey styles are my top pick because they're
incredibly sexy and comfortable. A Grecian-inspired LBD such
as this LaRok
dress would be insanely stunning. Shirred bodice and drapey one-shoulder
definitely sets it apart from the rest. And you can't miss
with one of Nicole
Miller's curve-hugging dresses. Love the fuchsia
color and gorgeous empire waistline on this one! Both
styles
are priced well under $250.
Note:
Accessorize withlarge chandelier earrings, a bold cuff,
and ultra-high heels.

Spring Redesign
It's that time again! When
April rolls in... It's simplify and redesign time. If
that Winter wardrobe is still hanging in your closet;
move it
along. Utilize that guest room closet, vacuum seal or shift
them to the other end of the shelf. Just do it.
Ditch the tall boots, and bring
in the shoe booties and sandals. Floral and bright dresses
in; sweaters and heavy knits out. Structured jackets,
blazers, and cardis stay; wools and tweeds...time to let it go.
It's all about having an
efficient closet. An uncluttered space will allow you to see
your inventory, and maximize your wardrobe year-round.
Tip of
the Day:
Ladies... Group
shoes by color and style; organize from lights to darks: ballets,
flat sandals, cut-outs, gladiators, shoe booties, pumps, etc.
Men... sandals,
sneakers, loafers and slip-ons, oxfords

$595 Donna Karan Jeans or
?????
The latest premium denim to hit
the market will cost you nearly $600. Let's
just say they're worth every penny (Donna Karan seems to think
so). I can appreciate fabulous denim, but really?
That's about two months worth of groceries for my family.
What about my shopping budget? What else would I have to
give up for these jeans?
A
whole new wardrobe from one of my guiltiest pleasures.

Q: Can you
recommend some designers or sites with great dresses for plus size
women? Thanks!Ranae
A: One of my
favorite designers for fabulous casual dresses is Rachel
Pally. Her jersey designs are effortlessly sexy with
amazing drape and movement. In 2007, she
launched her plus-size collection, Rachel
Pally White Label, which is available exclusively at
Nordstrom. Sizes range from 14-22 (1X-3X). Online
retailer igigi.com,
is another fav for contemporary day,
evening, and wedding-ready
styles at reasonable prices. The 'Daniella' dress below is
so flirty, and right on trend for Spring. Finally, my
"go-to" plus-size retailer...Lane
Bryant. You've heard it before, but they get it
right season after season. It's all the latest styles under
one roof. This Spring, the hottest dress trends will be
fabulously bright and bursting with florals. Love, love
the
airy ruffle accent chiffon dress. Sophisticated design and
feminine neckline makes it perfect for day or
night.

Fabulous for Less: The
Maxi Dress
So much talk about the maxi
dress... I couldn't resist posting today's
fabulous find. If you're still on the fence about these
lengthy dresses, believe me at this price it is more than worth a
try. They're so stylish, comfy, and these easy breezy one-
piecers
are super flattering.
Hit the global trend in this
safari-inspired "Tie
Dye Print Maxi Tube Dress." Love the smocked
tube top; perfect for those who have a little or more than enough
up top. With the bold, all-over print...all
that's left is to accessorize with a statement
necklace, gold
layered bangles, and gladiator sandals or super high
wedges.

Quote of the Day
"Every girl should have a
good pair of jeans and a leather jacket." --JT on Oprah
Justin Timberlake on his William
Rast Spring 09 collection. Did you hear that
girls????
Q: Are high waist
jeans still in style? And who can wear them? Christine
A: Yes, and
unfortunately these retro 70s style jeans can't seem to fade fast
enough. Don't get me wrong, I loved them back
in the
day. But high-waisted jeans are one of the trickiest styles
to pull off. Remember the recent Jessica Simpson
debacle? If you're considering these jeans, please take
note: 1. If you're tall
and curvy (bootie included), this style will highlight
every inch of your body. I would recommend either skinny or
wide legs. Both are super flattering for your shape. 2.
On the other hand, if you're lacking for bootie and curves; be
aware. These jeans will seriously flatten your tushy.
Personally, I'm a fan of accentuating what your momma gave you (no
matter how big or tiny). Still, If you must...skip the ultra
high-waisted styles, and go
for a
higher rise. You'll get the same look without the
unflattering behind.
Note: Petites...you
too can wear this style. Get leggy with skinnys and bring
balance to a longer torso.
Q: I have large,
wide shoulders, and my breasts are even larger. I'm small
everywhere else which makes shopping really difficult.
Finding something that looks good on me is next to
impossible. What can I do? T
A: It seems you're
an inverted triangle. The View's
Sherri Shepard also shares a similar shape. Unfortunately, the
photo below is an example of what not to wear.
Because you're top heavy, the last thing you'd want to do is draw
more attention to that area. Sherri's blousan style dress
gives her a coney effect; completely unflattering. No matter
your shape, what makes any outfit fabulous is proportion. So here are some tips to
remember: 1. Avoid the skin-tight look from
head-to-toe. 2. Deep Vs and Scoop Necks only. This will break up some of the
heaviness up top. 3. Go for "flare." Jackets
should have curved seams that fall away from your hips. This
will give the illusion of an hourglass shape. Shirts/Tops/Blouses
with prints or embellishments along the waistline will take
attention away from your upper body, and shift the focus to your
lower half. Full/Circle Skirts
are the most flattering for creating overall proportion. The
fullness balances your upper body and offers a shapely hourglass
silhouette.
Note: Add a wide
belt to highlight your tiny waistline .

A.

Gotta Have It! Fergie
Shoes
Since last year's announcement,
all we had were photos. But the wait is over! Fergie
Ferg's new shoe collection, Fergie
is now available in select boutiques,
department stores, and online
shoe retailers. Pricepoint runs $71-$131.
The collection definitely
reflects the singer's style...sexy and edgy mixed with a little
street. The designs are right on trend
for Spring with fabulous hardware and beautiful genuine
leather. But the best part is the price. Don't worry,
you won't have to fork over your whole paycheck for
these darlings. These high-end designer styles are super
affordable. So if you're crazy about shoes...the latest
Fergie collection is beyond fab. We love, love them!!!

Ask the Stylist
Q: Can petites wear
maxi dresses? I love how they look on other women, but I'm
5'3" and not sure if it's right for me.
Thanks Cara
A: The answer is
absolutely "yes!" Because the cut is so flattering, there isn't a shape or size that can't wear the maxi
dress. They've been hot for a couple of seasons now,
and will continue as a Summer staple. From an afternoon of
shopping to a casual backyard bbq, you just can't go wrong.
The key to pulling off a maxi dress...it's all about the shoes and
maintaining a long line. Daytime style...cotton or jersey
fabrics look best with flat sandals
in brights, metallics or gladiators. For added
height, switch
it up with super high cork wedges.
Evening style...keep it flirty with dressy platforms, strappy
or high-heeled woven sandals.
Note: Whichever
shoes you choose, make sure
your hemline skims the floor. This will make you look long,
lean, and perfectly proportionate from head to toe.
*Petite celebs, Eva Longoria
Parker and Nicole Richie, shows us their effortless takes on the
maxi. Fabulous!!!!!

Not Your Boyfriend's Jeans
They're loose, comfy, and have
the ease of your man's jeans. The ever so hot "boyfriend"
style have become one of my favorite must-haves this season.
The look is relaxed with rolled cuffs, edgy distressing, and fab
for showing off those hot heels.
Now, the perfect pair doesn't
have to be pre-cuffed. Straight leg styles will also give
you the same effect-just roll them up to your desired
length. And what's great is that you can wear these jeans
year round (when cuffs lose their splendor).
The styles below are designed
with just the right amount of distressing (not overly shredded
like other brands), offer a little slouch to not take away from
your shape, and they're super versatile. Dress them up with
a ruffled blouse and blazer or go casually chic with a fresh
graphic tee, cutout
sandals, and a loose scarf.
So it's been awhile since I've
blogged. Travels have kept me away, but I'm
back!!!! Spring is approaching and lots to talk
about. Noticed a wave of "boyfriend" jeans
everywhere-specifically a very hot Hollywood label. Will
visit that next week.
And of
course...shoes.

Q: I’m embarrassed to ask this question. But I’m going on a date for the first time since my
divorce and need your help.We’re
going to a nice restaurant so I would prefer to wear a dress.I feel like I’m in pretty good shape for my age (early
40s), but what style should I wear? Anonymous
A:
“First date” style rule of thumb…Dress it up, but
don’t ever overdo the cleavage. If you’re going to a fancy restaurant; go for simple
elegance.I’d like
to see you in something that’s classic and sophisticated, yet
definitely sexy.Surely,
a little black dress would be appropriate for this occasion.Whether you’re larger or smaller up top, curvy or not,
this Lauren by Ralph Lauren Ford One-Shoulder Silk Dress is
stunning and amazingly flattering.I love the shirred one-shoulder detail and banded
waist. It’s just simply timeless and makes a worthy wardrobe addition.Another style that’s sure to grab his
attention is a brilliantly colored sheath.This curve-hugging
dress by Suzi Chin not only shows off your shape, but
has fantastic designer details without the high-end price tag.Accessorize with a little black
leather textured clutch and
silver metallic heels for an ultra sexy knockout look.
Note:A
classic black trench would make a chic evening topper.

Q: I'm fairly thin
and don't have a lot of curves. What styles can I buy that
would flatter my shape? Tammy
A: If you're
looking to add more definition, empire styles such as this J
Crew Dressy Jersey Grecian V-Neck Long Dress
have a
higher waistline to highlight your upper body while fluid draping
gives the illusion of curves. This dress is so feminine
and
additional banding does wonders to create a tiny
waistline. Shift
dresses are also quite flattering. These
loose-fitting styles are chic, comfortable, and designed with a
straight silhouette to work with your shape. Another
fabulous alternative are tulip
or bell-shaped skirts. These curvaceous styles
are wonderfully modern and make for the perfect day to evening
essential. Just pair it with a close-fitting top or
blouse for overall balance.

Oscars Designer
Challenge: A Dress for Trophy Girl
It seems “trophy” girls are getting a
great deal of attention these days.Until Rumor Willis received the Golden Globes honor,
who
really took notice?Well,
that’s all about to change at this year’s Oscars.
In the spirit of “Project Runway,” the
film academy challenged seven up-and-coming designers to create a
gown specifically for the awards escort.Of the designers named were Alan Del
Rosario, Sam Kori George, Marianne Kooimans, Moire Conroy, Nicolas
Putvinski, Maria Pinto (famous for dressing First Lady
Michelle Obama), and personal favorite, Robert
Rodriguez.His
collections can be found at high-end department stores and
specialty boutiques across the country.
The dresses were revealed Tuesday in Beverly
Hills at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The winner will be decided by you…so cast
your vote now. My first choice is the strapless silver crepe gown by Sam Kori
George.The design is
sexy, feminine, and oozes Hollywood glamour. Then again, Robert Rodriguez’s white column dress has
amazing fluidity and the asymmetrical shoulder with bow detail is
right on trend for Spring. So torn!!!
Tune in to the Academy Awards on February 22nd
to see the winning design.

2009 Grammy Awards Red
Carpet: So Fresh & Hot Mess
Last night's Grammy Red Carpet
was filled with a whole lotta sophistication and missing its familiar
edge. Minis were few, but the floor-length gowns and glam
black dresses were aplenty (blame it on the weekend rain).
Aside from Coldplay's colorful addition and
Diddy's lavender
leather bomber, the fellas opted for suited tonal chic. From
Ne-Yo, LL Cool J to the Jonas Brothers, the looks were tailored
and distinguished in all black.
Along with the fabulous few, came
the hot messes that had us wondering, "What the hey were they
thinking?" Here's a look at who made the "so
fresh" and "hot mess" list.
SO FRESH
photo/hollywood.com
Miley
Cyrus: By far,Miley's
freshest Red Carpet look! This dress by Herve
Leger is young, flirty, feminine, and perfectly age
appropriate. Rosette detail and sheer hemline mixed
with chunky bangles gave this look a sweet rock-n-roll edge.
photo/hollywood.com
Carrie
Underwood: We were hoping to see more leg, but
she made up for it on the Grammy stage. Stunning, slinky
gold gown by Zuhair Murad
and diamond drop earrings by Johnathan
Arndt; beyond gorgeous on the Red
Carpet.
photo/projectrungay
Giuliana
Rancic: Okay, so she's not an artist or
presenting an award. But E! News
hostess and Red Carpet correspondent, Giuliana just couldn't go
unnoticed. The dress sure looked familiar. Could it be
the same one designed by Project Runway contestant, Rami
Kashou? Ohhhh...yes it is! In fabulous
shades of grey, this strapless polka dotted mini was insanely
flattering (you can tell she was lovin' it). Asymmetrical
draping draws the eyes in and creates amazing curves.
Perfect choice and way to show support Giuliana!
Will.I.Am:
As much as we loved this, folks please do not
try it home. On the average person, this look can be a
complete mess. Hip hop artists are known for their fashion
flair and ability to mix it up.Only
a bravefew can pull this off,
and Will.I.Am looked totally fresh for Grammy night.
Jaime
Foxx: Actor, artist, and comedian, Jamie Foxx
(with daughter Corrine) was ultra dapper in a black and grey
ensemble. Cool shades and printed blazer gave it a fabulously
dressed up and modern look.
HOT MESS
photo/Lester
Cohen/Wireimage.com
Paula
Abdul: If there's anything good about this Basil
Soda dress, it's the color. With Paula's
skin-tone and hair color, she can do just about any bright shade of the rainbow. But there's a time when a designer should
just know when to quit. Love the gold belt, but that heavy
metal sprawling shoulder detail...so over the top!
photo/Kevin
Mazur/Wireimage.com
M.I.A:
Clearly,there are
many things wrong this picture. Overwhelming kimono style
sleeves, massive poof piled on top of her baby bump, and super
bright blue sneaks. Waaaay out of control!!!!!
But nothing was more mortifying than the sheer, polka
dotted, spandex get-up she wore for a performance with T.I., Lil
Wayne, Jay-Z, and Kayne West. Surely, a Grammy first!
photo/Kevin
Mazur/Wireimage.com
Leona
Lewis: Sorry Leona, you looked amazing at the
AMAs. But this taupey nude Randi
Rahm gown simply made us uncomfortable. Enough
said.
photo/hollywood.com
Natalie
Cole: Another example of a designer going too
far. Love, love the design, colors are brilliant, and
wonderful asymmetrical shoulder. But what was going
on with the ginormous gold chain? How about a bold, chunky
bracelet instead? Without it, this dress would have been
soooo FRESH.

Ask the Stylist
Q:In general, what is the ideal skirt length for work? What would be considered too short? Thanks Lisa
A:Every company has a dress code, but not all policies are
the same.Typically, traditional industries such as technology, financial,
and legal require a more conservative, professional look. The idea is more “business” and less flash.Hemlines that hit just above to just below the knees are
suitable and also flattering on most.Anything higher than two inches above the knees would be
considered inappropriate and should be avoided. Now, if you’re in a more creative work environment
(public relations, magazine house or advertising), the rules are
likely to be less restrictive. These image-driven industries tend to embrace a little more
punch in their employees' wardrobes.Styles
are trendier, more fashion-forward.This Spring, don’t be surprised to see an invasion of
mini-skirts popping up in offices across the country.Loose-fitting, high-waisted tulip styles especially, will
be hot, hot, hot.Just be cautious to not go too short. If you can safely bend over without offending co-workers, you
should get an office pass. However, if you’re still unsure, an inquiry with the boss
on company policies should get you the answers you need.

Q:I’m a stay-at-home mom with three small children.I don’t have a lot of money to spend on a new wardrobe. But I would like to get some basics for everyday. What pieces should I buy?ThanksKaren
A:A mommy myself, I know how easy it can be to fall into
“comfy” mode. From the time you make breakfast to getting them
ready for
school then on to laundry, who has time to get fancied up?With three little ones, you’ll definitely need some great

Fitted

Q: Where can If
find great tall boots for under $150? Lori Minneapolis,
MN
A: Before you begin
your search, keep in mind that boots are an investment (especially
in your parts). So be prepared to spend. Faux styles
are a complete waste of dollars. That means only genuine
leather is allowed. What's great about tall boots are there
versatility. They look amazing with just about anything;
pencil skirts, sweater dresses, pants or denim. Look for neutrals in
black, tan or grey like this classic pair by ALDO.
What I love is that it really gives basic blacks and jewel tones a
forward look. High stacked heel gives your calves and tush plenty of
lift with minimal discomfort. And they're on sale for just under
$90!!!! Another style that's on-trend and super hot this
season is the slouch boot. This tan Coconuts
'Kesha' Leather Boot has a fabulous buckle,
semi-rounded toe, and great stacked heels. Now, how chic
would these look with tucked-in jeans and a tunic sweater?
You can find both styles at Mall of
America; The ALDO Store and DSW.

Inaugural Ball 2009:
Michelle Obama in Jason Wu
The blogosphere is all
abuzz. Who hasn't weighed in on Michelle's Inaugural Ball
gown? Her white one-shouldered silk chiffon dress was designed
by one of the
industry's rising talents, Jason Wu.
Frilly accents and shimmering
crystals adorned the sweeping gown.
The color was stunning, and the
dress was beautiful. But like many, I too was surprised by
the choice. Although I love the idea of a modern one-shoulder
gown, a column or Grecian style
dress would have been even more flattering on her statuesque frame.

Several designers made
submission for this Inaugural Ball. But my top choice goes
to Marchesa designers,
Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig. Their ivory one-shoulder
silk-crepe gown has an amazingly fluid shape, elegant drape, and
crystal-encrusted shoulder provides just enough glamour for this
historical event.
Pamella
Roland From her Spring 09 collection, this white
one-shoulder gown with sweeping shoulder train would have been
equally glamorous.

Inauguration 2009:Michelle Obama in Isabel Toledo
As our 44th President Barack Obama
took oath, First Lady Michelle O made history of her own in a
sparkly pale yellow sheath and matching jacket by Isabel
Toledo.Her
accessories came in unexpected shades of green; leather gloves by J
Crew and dark green Jimmy
Choos.Later
at the Inaugural luncheon, another yellow-toned layer was revealed
in a jeweled-clasp cardigan.
Michelle’s Inaugural dress choice came as a
surprise to many, including Isabel Toledo herself. It was reported that notable fashion designers Oscar de la
Renta and Diane von Furstenberg were also in the running.Designer aside, what’s wonderfully familiar is the
classic sheath she’s favored time and time again throughout the
campaign. It's what we've come to expect and love. This silhouette is
incredibly flattering and Michelle knows exactly what works for
her body. She looked sophisticated; regal yet approachable, and appeared very much the
"First Lady."

Q:My best friend is getting married in Hawaii and I need to
find something to wear to the rehearsal dinner. We are told it’s going to be very casual.
Can I get away with wearing
shorts?
Sasha
Maryland
A: For
the most part, shorts would be considered "very
casual." Although completely suitable for informal
outdoor events, I would recommend skipping them for a daytime
dress. Save the shorts for the beach. After all, this
is a rehearsal dinner. You don't want to be
underdressed. An "easy breezy" printed
or strappy
knit maxi paired with metallic
flat sandals would be perfect for this occasion.
Silk, satin or chiffon styles would be too dressed up in this
case. Just add a single long-strand necklace, oversized
earrings, and bracelet and you've got a casually stylish rehearsal
dinner ensemble.
Note:
This Spring, look for sandals with fantastic hardware, in metallic
and bold hues, and gladiator styles will be back and hotter than
ever!

2009 Golden Globes Red
Carpet: Best Dressed
Held at the Beverly
Hilton, the stars came out in droves for last night's
66th Annual Golden Globe Awards. One by one, the procession
of limos, Escalades, and town cars lined along Whittier Drive
awaiting their Red Carpet arrivals. From the corner of
Wilshire Blvd to the E! Red Carpet drop-off, cheering fans greeted
them at every juncture in hopes of spotting their favorite
celebrity. It was pure Hollywood.
Now, the show before the
show... Welcome to the Red Carpet where shoulder-baring
gowns, sweeping floor-lengths, and glam jewels ruled! If you missed last night's coverage, here's a recap of the hotties who made our Best
Dressed list.
BEST DRESSED

Eva Mendes:
Absolute
perfection
in a white Diorstrapless
gown; a modern Audrey. One of two starlets in white who looked
utterly regal from head-to-toe. Turquoise Van
Cleef & Arpels bib necklace kept it dramatic but
demure. Loved the layered hip detail, curve-hugging style,
and unbelievably flattering fit. Our best dressed girl of
the night!

Olivia Wilde: The"House" M.D. glided across the Red Carpet in
lavender ReemAcra.
Few can pull off this many ruffles, but
the waist-cinching
silhouette, gorgeous pleated bodice, jeweled belt, and flowy style
was breathe-taking.

Eva Longoria: Some
may say, "she's back to rule the Red Carpet." But
Eva's never left.Looking so red HOT in Reem
Acra! This is how petites do floor-length
gowns. Fantastic fishtail hemline and scalloped sweetheart
neckline gives her a major lift. What girl (and guy) doesn't
love that?

Amy Adams: Our
Minnesota girl has come a long way from the Chanhassen Dinner
Theatre to the Golden Globes. Now she's working the Red
Carpet like a pro. This black strapless Oscar
de la Renta was the perfect "belle of the
ball" gown for last night's awards show. And when
you're wearing Oscar, you know you've made it. That's what dreams are
made of. Way to go Amy!

Rumer Willis:
Little
Miss Golden Globe is all grown up and looked insanely fabulous in
another Reem Acra
creation. Rich plum color was the perfect compliment to her porcelain
skin and red hair. Draping and pleated details were expertly
executed and the jeweled belt highlighted her tiny
waistline.

Granitz/Wireimage
Kate Beckinsale: Not
only doesthis talented English actress captivate us on the
big screen, she continues to wow us on the Red Carpet. With
her hair pulled back, "it's all eyes on me." In
white J. Mendel, there's no
going wrong when you've got a body like hers. Strapless
ruffled neckline is wonderfully feminine and the look is finished
with glamorous chandelier earrings and jewels by Fred
Leighton.

Colin Farrell: Wins
for Best actor In Burges, and our best dressed guy
of the night! Looking so sharp and chic in his black tie
ensemble and navy/green tonal plaid vest (earrings and all).
We loved the "cleaned up" Colin.

Q:Is it okay for men over 40 to wear graphic tees?Audrey New York
A:It’s not so much can he wear graphic tees; instead your
attention should be on design.Specifically, anything that may draw even the slightest
negative reaction, I would steer clear of.Those frat boy tees, styles emblazed with skulls and
crossbones (bad boy types-it’s all yours), and anything
embellished with crystals, studs or hardware are a definite no.
These styles are too young and inappropriate for his age.Graphic tees bring an edge to his look, and they’re
perfect with jeans and layered under cardis, sweaters, or hoodies.

Springing Forward With
“Hammer Pants”
The industry affectionately refers to them as
harem pants.Call
them what you want, it’s all the same to me.These “Hammer” style pants may have been smokin in the
80s, but I can assure you they will not be resurfacing in my
Spring wardrobe.Fool
me once-you had me.This
time around…oh, no, no, no!
They dominated the Spring 09 runways. From the up-and-comers to fabulous Vivienne Westwood…the
exaggerated hips, super sagging crotch, and tapered legs-they’re
baaacck!!!Tiny,
curvy, round or whatever your shape, these pants won’t flatter a
soul.Look and you
shall see…All that
excess fabric shouldn't be draping between your legs.Lean, tailored, and ultra-flattering…that’s more like
it any time of year.
Hayden-Harnett, the latest
designer collabo to hit Target is now available in stores and online
(Dec 28, 2008 through March 15, 2009). Handbag designer, ToniHacker along with BF Ben Harnett
started up shop in
April 2005 out of their humble Brooklyn apartment. In a
short span of time, the duo has achieved worldwide success
offering their luxe handbags in the finest boutiques from New York
and Cali to France and Hong Kong.
When it comes to handbags,
scrimping is not an option; quality and style are
everything. For the Hayden-Harnett collection,
a little bit
of luxury can cost upwards of $700 for the hottest
styles. But not so at Target! Affordability is a must
and the latest designer installment isn't lacking for high-end
details either.
From oversized daytime clutches
to floral printed hobos and edgy bags with chain- link and studded
details, this collection is
a must-buy! My favorite style is
the black hobo. Its larger size makes it perfect for
everyday or ideal for the office. Features optional
shoulder strap and top-handle, fabulous gold-tone hardware,
crinkled patent details along shoulder strap, corners, and
trim. Interior is lined in a chic, satiny multi-colored print and
signature name plate. Made of PVC, this bag looks
delightfully high-end.

We want to wish you all a wonderful, safe, and Happy Holiday
Season!!!!

Q: I need an outfit
for New Years and can't spend anymore than $100. I'm looking
for something pretty and sexy. And I would
like to be able
to find it in town. Please help! Alisha
Minneapolis, MN
A: Nothing says
"pretty" best than ruffles and bows. So finding a
dress with these little details will be key to pulling off this
look. In order to maximize your budget, I would go for one
outstanding piece like this satiny
feminine mini dress. Whether you're
athletic-shaped or curvy, this style is sure to flatter. The inspiration for this
look is a play on the LBD. Keep it tonal, but create
interest with lots of texture and fabulous accessories. It's
chilly this time of year so cover up with a pair of black opaque
tights. For heels, I chose black
patent Mary-Janes with ribbon detail, but leather ankle
booties would be equally fantastic. The ruffled neckline
takes center stage so be careful to not over accessorize. A brilliantlyjeweled cuff and simple gold
hoops will compliment this dress beautifully. And
to top it off, a great patent clutch with gold-tone buckles of
course. The best part...not only will you find everything in
town, but you can get it all for under $100!
Note: For more hot accessories,
check out Marshalls for
unbelievable prices and selections.
If you want to add a little
"wow" to that sheath or strapless style dress this
holiday season, a statement-making necklace is the way to
go. Denim fanatics can sparkle in a shiny
evening top, tuxedo style jacket, and fantastic heels. This
fabulous flower
pendant necklace combines a touch of edge with feminine
flair. Love it! Why splurge when you don't have
to? Priced under $10...it's shockingly affordable!!!

Fashion Focus: Mens Peacoats
Year
after year, decade after decade...the peacoat is one style
capable of withstanding fashion's ever revolving trends. The
winter season is here. If it's not already hanging your
closet, include this as your one absolute
"must-have". Peacoats are classics that lend chic sophistication to every guys' wardrobe. This season's
designs are modernized with sharp military-styled epaulettes and a
close-fitting cut. Choose from traditional wool to luxurious
cashmere. Those in need of extra coverage from winter's
chill, check out the styles below.
Q: I'm 42 years old and a
mother of three. My question is, is it appropriate for
someone my age to wear leggings? Thanks Anonymous
A: You've seen them
plastered in just about every fashion magazine there is.
Whether you're a fan of them or not, the leggings trend is back
and won't be giving way anytime soon. For Spring 09,
designers are taking them to whole new levels with graphic,
floral, striped, metallic, cut-out, and even shredded
versions. But I wouldn't rush to your nearest mall just
yet. When it comes to leggings, age is a consideration for
the wearer. Hot mama types like Heidi
Klum and starlets such as Nicky
Hilton rocked their "hot pants" flawlessly in
shiny faux
leather versions. These industry pros definitely
make dressing up look easy. But not everyone can pull it
off (especially when you reach a certain age). Legging
lovers under the age of 40, go ahead and get your style on!
Being that you're 42, caution may be necessary. Personally, I
would not
recommend it. But if you've got the goods to pull it off,
don't let my advice dissuade you. After all, there really
are no rules in fashion-just limitations.

2008 American Music Awards
Red Carpet: So Fresh & Hot Mess
SO FRESH
The Pussycat Dolls: Wrapped
in halter, strapless, and one-shoulder minis, each
"doll" came so perfectly dressed in Project Runway's Christian
Sariano. A little touch of Springtime glory in
cool November...how lovely.
Leona Lewis: British
songtress Leona Lewis looked incredibly feminine and effortless in
Jenny Packham. Cocktail
length and beautifully beaded bodice accented her curves in all
the right
places.
Taylor Swift: Finally,
the perfect dress for this country princess! Taylor gets
dipped in metallic silver from Collette
Dinnigan's Spring 09 collection. Asymmetrical
mini is young, modern, and shows off just enough skin to inspire a
second take. So, so hot!
Chris Brown: Artist
of the Year and without a doubt the best dressedguy at the
AMAs. He's got that "cool thing" down. But a
smile would be nice.
Daughtry: Tops the
charts for the FRESHEST dressed band of the night. Their looks combined
individual style with edgy chicness and plenty of rock star
status!
HOT MESS
Natasha Bedingfield: Although
not opposed to pantsuits on the Red Carpet, ill fit was to blame
for this fashion offender. A mere size down would've
done wonders for Natasha's figure. Sagging crotch, lopsided
shoulders, and a last-minute attempt at a hem job...it's an unfortunate
mess.
Rihanna: A
fashionable risk taker, Rihanna'snever one to shy from the
Red Carpet. Her style veers from girly girl to avant garde.
But of recent, her looks (hair styles included) have been
questionable including this creamy layered confection by Zac
Posen. Now, just because it's not body-hugging
doesn't mean it can't be totally fabulous. But this heavily
layered number did nothing but pile on serious poundage to her
fantastic figure. Unbelievable choice of accessories on this
one (specially gloves and studded heels). On the other hand, thisZac creation would've done Rihanna's body some
major good with sex appeal and just enough edge for her signature
"bad girl" style.
HONORABLE MENTION
Alicia Keys: She's
multi-talented and absolutely one of the industry's most beautiful
people. Alicia came soooooo close in another amazingly rich cobalt Armani
Prive. Swarovski encrusted asymmetrical shoulder
and empire waistline embraced her incredible figure. Upswept do
kept it elegant and makeup was flawless. So what's with the jeweled bindi?
Customary to West Indian culture, it's a mark which symbolizes marriage. Okay,
was she trying to tell us something or was this just another
accessories slipup? What a distraction!

Q:I have a sweater dress that I’ve never worn. The design is simple with long sleeves and the color is
charcoal.I want to
wear it to a party and need help dressing it up.Should I wear heels or boots with it?Allison Minneapolis, MN
A:The simplicity of sweater dresses is what makes them so
chic.They’re a
one-piece wonder and just right for this time of season. And what’s amazing is that they’re quite flattering on
most body types.Since
charcoal is a versatile neutral color, there are many ways you can
wear it.Depending on
the style of dress… Form-fitting versions look fabulous on its
own allowing your curves to make a daring statement.Just don’t skimp on fantastic jewelry.Well-edited accessories will be key to taking this look
to
the next level.Cinch
loose-fitting styles with a wide black patent leather belt to add
more shape while gracing your curves.Be sure to position the belt just above your natural
waistline (belly button) to highlight a tiny waist.Adorn the neckline with chunky styled or multi-chained
necklaces for a dose of“tough girl” glamour.Earrings are unnecessary in this case, but a simple hoop
will do if you so choose.Additionally
fabulous, are thinly stacked bangles or a single bold cuff.As for hosiery, go for opaque tights in black or your color
of choice.With
winter in mind, a great textured
leather bootie or tall
high-heeled boots would be perfect for this party time
style.And because
big bags just won’t do, add a small clutch to accent your look.
Note: pop neutral head-to-toe ensembles with a metallic or
brightly-colored bag.

Q: What is the best way
to wear flat boots? Emily Los Angeles, CA
A: I'm just loving
the easy, cool, chic look they bring to everyday styles.
Anyone still debating whether or not to buy these boots?
Believe me you are going to get loads of style mileage with these
darlings! And apparently, celebutantes like Michelle,
Jessica, and Blake are digging them too. To create your best
look, I would recommend wearing them in a couple of ways: 1.
Day or night, tucked in skinny jeans will create a fabulously lean
silhouette. Finish your look with a belted sweater, cardi or
go layered with a blouse and leather jacket. 2.
Girly girls opt for tunic dresses or skirts above the knee.
If "boho chic" is more your style...floral prints will
give you the look you desire. Just keep hemlines high to
maintain proportion. Petites especially, be cautious of this
or you risk cutting your line in half. So hike it
up!!! Add a splash of color with this season's
richly-colored tights or go monochromatic chic in tonal shades.

One-on-One with "I'm Not
Britney" Star Ndoema and Director Phillip Christon
Undoubtedly, Los Angeles offers some the
finest shopping destinations around. But it’s not just the fashions that have me
excited about
this new place we call home.I’m also finding one the best perks of my job is
attending the many fabulous happenings around town.It seems every week there’s a boutique opening, movie
premiere or Red Carpet event. Now if I weren’t so put off by the LA traffic, I’d
venture beyond my doorstep more times than not.
Recently, I had the opportunity to attend the
La Femme Film Festival in
Beverly Hills for the premiere screening of “I’m
Not Britney.”A short film produced and starring international beauty, Ndoema(En-DOY-mah) and directed by award-winning
director Phillip
Christon.With
a title so provocative and promise of fabulous fashions…invitation accepted!
Ndoema is of African and European descent
whose beauty exceeds the very obvious and offers an insanely
impressive resume to boot.This
one time Parisian runway model turned fashion designer has earned
notable degrees in Law including a Masters in International Law,
has served as a UN representative as well as continuing her
efforts as a human rights advocate. As if that wasn’t enough, uprising actress Ndoema tackles
a bold new role as “the
global girl.”Absolute
in her message, she takes the audience through a riveting spoken
word performance.Each
scene clearly in defiance of Hollywood’s stereotypes and armed
with one fabulous gown after another (16 wardrobe changes in
total). Here’s a look at the short film and see how
it’s inspiring audiences and making a global impact.
And be sure not to miss my top 3 fashionable highlights:
The opening scene-stealing
asymmetrical gown in liquid lame with plunging back and 30-ft
train is Ndoema’s very own design and tops my list for major
oooh-la-la!
Scene: I'm Not a Pseudo-Centerfold
Ndoema wears a one hundred-pleat opalescent charmeuse gown with
jeweled decolletage circa the 1960s.
Scene: I'm Not a Prude Ndoema
wears a vintage black and silver Parisian lace bodice and a cloud
of silk tulle.
I later caught up with Ndoema and director
Phillip Christon at the film’s after-party at LA hotspot, ONE
Sunset for a little one-on-one.Here’s their take on fashion and
the controversial film.
BB:Tell me…what is your message?
N:I'd say that fashion, to me, is truly a universal language.I've lived in over a dozen countries around the world and
I've experienced time and again how it's something we girls all
share. Fashion is an amazing creative outlet for me because
it's not just eye-candy you know, it can draw attention to and
send out powerful messages. Combine fashion with film, and
the tremendous impact movies have in shaping our self-perception and society at large, and you've got a pretty explosive
combination!In many
ways, "I’m Not Britney" is the epitomy of the kind of
movies I want to produce. Fashion-driven films that are fun
and entertaining but at the same time inspire and motivate us to
stand up for what we believe in.And I really feel a deep connection with today's global
audience.This is
something I'm really proud of, and it's important to be proud of
what you do, whether it's in Hollywood or in your own home.Taking pride is wonderful, but actually doing what you’re
proud of makes all the difference.
PC:The most exciting thing for me is to witness Ndoema’s
remarkable impact upon teens and college girls across the globe. It’s pretty phenomenal. And it’s rare, because Ndoema
is not your typical Hollywood movie star. Sure, she
possesses all the physical movie star assets, but even on that
level, Ndoema’s all-embracing beauty allows young women of all
ethnicities to identify and connect with her in a truly unique
way.And then you
combine that with this powerful message she’s putting out there
and right away everyone sees that Ndoema is the real thing.Beauty and brains.Style
and substance. Ndoema generates this tremendous amount of passion
for a reason, because she stands for something truly positive. Her global appeal is a powerful unifying force.I have no doubt that Ndoema is positioned to be
Hollywood’s first true global star. She really is the next big thing.
BB:Where was the location of production and how were you able
to include the many faces represented in the film?
PC:Hollywood, CA.I
hope that everyone who experiences "I'm Not Britney", no
matter where they are in the world, recognizes a part of
themselves up there on the screen. This is Ndoema's gift. I mean come on, the global audience
represents 70% of ticket sales in Hollywood today, so how come
those faces aren't up there onscreen where they belong? Both
Ndoema and I make an active effort to cast internationally and to
view every role without a label, not by geography, not by
ethnicity, just people as people. In some cases with
"I'm Not Britney", we even shot remotely in other parts
of the world using some of the latest in new media technologies,
and later combined that footage to specifically include cast
members who were not part of the "Hollywood"
establishment.It’s
something that's really important to both Ndoema and myself.
Hollywood should belong to all of us.
So what’s next for Ndoema and Phillip?I hear there are more projects in the works for this
dynamic duo.Another
bold film? One thing’s for sure…expect the return of a very stylish
Ndoema!

couture sheath with

Q:My husband thinks it’s okay to wear black socks with his
tan suit.But I
disagree.Who is right? Thanks.Sara St. Paul, MN
A:When it comes to tan, taupe or brown pants…black socks
are never an option. The fashion rule of thumb is to always match your socks
with your pants-not shoes.Visually,
it makes all the sense.When
sitting down, the hemline tends to rise hence giving us a peak at
your socks.Black
socks next to a tan pant will break your line (silhouette)-not a
fashionable declaration in the least.A smooth transition from pant to shoes is what we’re
looking for.Clearly,
anything in the brown family will work. But your husband can also incorporate a variety of colored
socks with his suits by playing off the colors of his tie.Although, a tricky move for novices…just the right tone
can make any ensemble fabulous. The winner of this debate goes to you!

Stylish First Lady Michelle
Obama
It’s official!!!!!!Congratulations President-Elect
Barack Obama!!!Now
that the election is over…we fashion enthusiasts can continue
our obsession with Michelle Obama’s wardrobe.Already heavily scrutinized, it seems not everyone was
thrilled with last night’s abstract infused red and black
ensemble.Courtesy of
Narciso Rodriguez’s Spring
09 collection, this classic sheath was redesigned in such a chic,
forward way that it fully embodies today’s modern woman.Contrary to some, Michelle’s fashion choice not only
flattered her curvy figure, but also made a very powerful
statement as our future First Lady. Her black cardigan in place of a suit jacket added a more
demure finish to the look.And
the brilliant jolt of red draws you in as if to say, “Take a
closer look because we’ve made it!”
Her choices are stylish yet sensible and
she’s not afraid to mix it up.From luxury designer Thakoon
to mainstream J Crew and
White House BlackMarket,
it’s apparent Michelle’s got a thing for fashion. And thanks to her signature brooches, these jeweled
accessories have added a new sparkle to the style scene.Just one more must-have on this season’s shopping list.
The nation will be watching as our
President-Elect takes his oath on January 20th.And surely, the fashion world will be glued to
the tube
ready to dish on what the First Lady is wearing. Pick and
choose carefully Mrs. Obama...these fashionistas can be ruthless!

IT'S ELECTION DAY
Politics on this blog?
There's no heated round table here. You can tune in to "The View" for that. But it's Election
Day folks! We can't afford to ignore it. With the many
challenges facing our country today (besides Joe the plumber), our
new president will have some mighty shoes to fill. You can
be effective in this election. Be heard, get in line, and

Fashionista, Mommy, and
Costume Designer?
Never in my life did I think
making Halloween costumes would be a requirement.I always wondered why some parents choose
to do so.Buying fabric, cutting, and sewing. Can’t you just go to the store and buy one?It seems a bit silly.
So just a day before Halloween,
here I am finding myself scrambling to sew our son’s costume.Fashion I know, but costume designer? Are you serious! All those choices we gave him (ones you can buy)…not
budging.The power of
a six year old.
Here he is as “Yoshi” from
Super Mario Bros.That
smile makes it all worth it!For all you soon-to-be parents…get ready.Once you join “the club” there’s not much you won’t
do for your children.But
let’s hope he takes it easy on his Mommy next year.

Ask the Stylist
Q:Like so many women, I love to shop. But with our economy in crisis, I can’t even imagine
paying $800 for shoes or a designer bag.And it just doesn’t make sense to spend a lot of money on
designer clothes.I
think fashion magazines advertising these products are
irresponsible and out of touch with the real world. Who can
afford it really?Anonymous
A:There’s no denying…the economy is definitely in tough
shape right now.But
don’t let it steal your joy.Your lifestyle doesn’t have to be completely changed by
it.Heck, I grew up
in a recession ( you know where I’m going with this). You don’t have to be a "rich girl" to live a
“rich” life.Believe
me, great style isn’t only limited to designer goods. It’s all in how you put it together. To achieve designer
style, make sure to
combine at least one high-end quality piece with lower-end items
and pull the look together with fabulous shoes and a bag.A tailored jacket or pant (both great investments) will
look expensive and these classics will give you plenty of style
mileage for years to come.And
if you think designer clothes are beyond your budget…think
again.Get familiar
with stores such as Marshalls,
TJ
Maxx, Cenutry
21, and ROSS
(available in 27 states). These retailers offer designer goods for men, women, and
kids including designer bags and shoes with discounts up to 70%
off retail.And the
best part…everything is in season!!!!!!Also, don’t forget about the sales racks. You’ll be surprised by the steep discounts offered at major
department stores. Those
in MN, check out Nordstrom Rackat MOA for more fabulous
finds. So get your fashion fix. It’s okay to shop and you won’t have to break the bank
doing it.

Q:I’d like to know how to wear colored tights.I'm just not used to wearing anything but black or nude and all these new colors
are a little
scary.Thanks!Melissa
Santa Monica, CA
A:Colored
tights are a fantastic way of adding punch to neutral tunics and
minis.But what makes
one fashionista stand out from the rest is the ability to
experiment with color.For
daytime chic, I would suggest combining raspberry colored tights
with rich navy and pop it with neutral browns. Try chocolate tights with fabulous bordeaux or purples with
greys.The idea is to
be consistent with the tone and not overdo the look. Suede
leather boots add wonderful texture and dept. The perfect
finish to this on-the-go style.

Presidential Style:The Final Debate
Oh no…We’re not here to discuss the outcome of last night’s
final debate.Surely,
we have our opinions, as do you.
Clearly, what caught
our eyes were the fashions worn by presidential candidates, Obama
and McCain, and their leading ladies.
Democratic candidate, Senator Barack Obama
suited in a more traditional solid navy, white shirt, and a red
striped tie.Michelle
Obama, in a periwinkle sheath and statement making long pearl
strand necklace with three floral pastel-colored pins.Republican candidate, Senator John McCain in a
modern black pinstriped suit, white shirt, and a contrasting navy
blue tie.Cindy
McCain, donned a in bold red Chanel-esq skirt suit accented with
a brooch.
photo/AP/cnn.com
Could there really be a message behind their
styles?In the world
of politics where image is everything…you better believe it.There’s no subtlety about it (just ask their advisors).Let’s examine the meaning behind the color choices worn
by each candidate.
Interestingly, the candidates wore ties
opposite the color of their political party. What’s the big deal?Especially for this final debate, worn with a white shirt
it’s the one fashion statement that captures our attention.
Obama in red, the color symbolizes power, excitement, confidence,
and commanding.McCain
in navy and contrasting light blues-dark blue representing truth,
wisdom, integrity, and knowledge.Light blues tend to have a more calming effect while
conveying commitment, dependability, and trustworthy.
As for our potential first ladies…Michelle's periwinkle (lavender blue) sheath was classic yet
her bold pearl necklace added a modern touch.Could she be channeling the beloved, Ms. Jackie O?And we can’t help but wonder about Cindy’s ultra
conservative style choice-a stark contrast to her RNC
outfit (price tag excluded).
Yes, all eyes were on
her. But a little more suitable for First Lady Laura Bush if
you ask us.
Hmmmm????What did you think about their fashion choices for the
final presidential debate?Did
it have any affect on their performance?
Share your ideas with us. We
want to hear from you!!!!

Fabulous for Less: Sheath Dresses
It's the dress of the season. Reminiscent
of iconic beauties AudreyHepburn and Jackie
Onassis, this classic, elegant style is quickly becoming a
major player for Fall. Celeb darlings JLo, Heidi Klum,
Victoria Beckham, and Jenny McCarthy have all been seen around
town in their designer versions by Roland
Mouret. With its curve-defining shape, artful
necklines, and impeccably tailored details...there's plenty to
love. To get your star style, the designer's signature
sheaths can range anywhere from $2,000-$3,000.
photo/people.com
Stunning as they are, for many these dresses
can be far from within reach. And what about working shoes, jewelry,
and a bag into the mix? For those without a celebrity
budget, there's no need to worry. You too can
"steal" this look for so much less and have room for
those must-have accessories. A
form-fitting silhouette, detailed neckline, and gorgeous pleated
extras is all you'll need to get "fabulous for less."
Q:I really need
help with my wardrobe!Since
gaining a few pounds, I feel I’ve lost my sense of style and
just want to get back to looking pretty again.I’m working on losing the weight, but could use some new
clothes.I haven’t shopped in a long time and just don’t know what
to buy anymore.Thanks
for your advice.Joy New Jersey
A:We’ve all been there.Whether it’s 5, 10 or 20 lbs, a little weight gain can
make anyone uninspired to shop. But allowing yourself to fall into a fashion slump is doing
no one any favors.I’m
a believer that you can look fabulous whatever your size.As long as the fit is right, you’re on your
way to looking and feeling your best.So as you work to reach your weight goals,
here are some tips
to finding just the perfect pieces for your wardrobe and help you
look 10 lbs pounds lighter in the process.
Do's
*Dark Colors
are your universally slimming: Black, Grey, Navy or any of
Fall’s rich berry colors will do.
*Fabrics with Girth
will provide added coverage where needed: cottons, twills or
knits.Structured,
tailored styles will also offer a more slimming effect.
*Ruching Details
hides and conceals.
*Dark Washed Denim
is flattering for body all types, and they’re super
versatile for dressing up or down.
*Verticals:
pinstripes (keep it fine) or vertical lines will make you
appear long and lean every time.
*Snip the Size Tag
If the number on the tag bothers you, get rid of it.Remember, it’s the fit that matters.
*Spanx
it Up!Don’t
worry, know one else but you will notice you’re even wearing
them.This
little wonder is going to help
you look lean and smooth all over.
A definite do!
Don'ts
*Ruffles and Pleats These
details in problem areas will only add bulk and volume.
*Thin, Clingy
Fabrics Will emphasize those not-so-flattering
areas.
*Oversized Sweaters,
Sweatshirts, and Tops No, no, no!Unlike what many may think, these too large styles do
little to disguise and will make you appear much larger than you
really are.

Gotta Have It! Urban Outfitters
Slouchy Suede Foldover Boot
Boots, boots, boots... These days,
that oh-so-fabulous pair can cost you a pretty change.
Sure, there's plenty of affordable faux leather versions, but
don't expect them to last anymore than a season. The price
tag may be just right, but walk away from the faux. When it comes to boots,
buying for quality as well as style is the best way to stretch
your dollars.
Made of genuine suede leather, this super
stylish pair by Urban
Outfitters is the "gotta have it" boot
of the season. Love them with skinny jeans, graphic tee, and
a blazer. Cognac and wine looks amazingly chic with Fall's
neutral palette. And the best part, they're priced well
under $100!

Ask the Stylist
Q: Now that Fall is here I'm
ready to shop for sweaters. Which styles would you suggest I
buy for my pear-shaped body? Anything under $100 would be
great. Thanks! Deb Edina, MN
A: Fall....my favorite time of
the season and all the reason to pile on the layers. Sweaters
are a necessity, but cardigans are going to be the most versatile
piece you'll buy this year. Worn with jeans, pants, dresses
or pencil skirts, they're ideal for both work and play.
Curvy girls such as yourself, should look for lengthy styles that will drape flawlessly over your hips
while de-emphasizing that area. Layering it with a feminine
ruffled blouse draws the focus up top and is a great way of adding
interest to your neutral cardi. Play up your curves a bit
more by adding a wonderful textured leather belt-highlighting your
teeny tiny waistline. Here are some fabulous options under
$100:
Yes-you can wear horizontal
stripes! Forget the old adage, "they make you look
wide." As long as the stripes are fine (not wide),
they'll have the same slimming effect as verticals. Love
this boyfriend style in charcoal/black for just $19.80!
Fabulous roll-tab sleeve
creates overall proportion for your shape while directing the eyes
up top. Go casually chic with trouser jeans and ankle
booties.
Expect fantastic quality and
style. Just slightly over $100, this "anything but
basic" cashmere blend will maximize your wardrobe for years
to come. Available in a variety of colors.

Dressing for your Age
What does that really mean? There
seems to be a lot of question about what's appropriate to where,
who can where the trends, and at what age?
There's no better example of what not to
wear than on today's episode of "The
View." I about tipped over in my chair this
morning seeing Whoopi Goldberg in a shift dress with opaque
tights and t-strap pumps. It turns out that ElisabethHasselbeck chose this look for her.
First of all, this had to be the one and only time ever she's worn a dress on
the show-a milestone it was. But this was one style
experimentation gone so, soooo wrong!!! Not only was this look
too young (much more suited for co-host Sherri Shepard),
but why on earth would she agree to wearing such an
ensemble? Clearly, this was not at all "Whoopi"
and her discomfort was painfully evident.
Dressing for your age is definitely
important, but so is staying true to who you are. Keep in
mind, trends are great for modernizing a wardrobe. But not
every trend may work for you. Whoopi would have looked just
as fabulous in slouchy pants, a crisp white shirt, and tailored
vest. And of course, she can pile on her fabulous
jewelry. Now that's on trend, age appropriate, and all
Whoopi!

Primetime Emmy Awards 08: Red Carpet's
Best Dressed
photo/wwd.com
Eva Longoria-Parker:
Forget those Red Carpet bashers! Eva looked absolutely darling and
without a doubt, this was the perfect choice from Marchesa's
Spring 09 collection. Cocktail length, fabulously layered
fringed bodice, and intricately wrapped bow graced her petite
frame perfectly. Questionable hair and makeup (preggers or
not-a tousled bob would've de-emphasized her fuller cheeks).
Gorgeous drop earrings and clutch, but lose the shoes.
Silver metallic peep-toes was all she needed to finish this flirty
Red Carpet look.
photo/tvguide.com
Mariska Hargitay: Emmygoddess! Insanely
beyond in Carolina Herrera and
Fred Leighton jewels.
Beautifully swept updo, just enough glam jewelry, and the perfect
wine-colored nails to compliment this one-shoulder canary yellow
gown. Her best look ever!
photo/tvguide.com
Heidi Klum: Draped
in stunning metallic Armani Prive.
As she walked, it was the way the dress swayed that made this
swingy asymmetrical design stand out from the rest.
Oversized butterfly earrings competed with the dress, but blinged-out
ring-fantastic!
photo/tvguide.com
Nicollette Sheridan: A
modern Cinderella in this rich jeweled-tone Angel
Sanchez creation. From his Fall 08 collection,
this was a surprising choice from the bridal designer.
Sweeping floor length and detailed folds are simply elegant.
Nicollette's best ever!
photo/etonline.com
Chandra Wilson: Love,
love, love it! Justfabulous in Tadashi.
Amazing halter style and perfectly placed drapes along the
waistline draws the eyes in-making her look tiny, tiny.
Not crazy about the red accessories, but her retro-inspired hair
and glam makeup are perfection.

Q:My daughter and I love shopping together and we dress a lot
alike. She looks great in her skinny jeans and I’ve been eyeing a
pair for myself. But I haven’t seen too many moms wearing them.Is there an age limit on who can where these jeans?Suzanne New York
A:Assuming you have a teenage daughter (as skinnys are way
too grown for girls under 13), there’s no reason for you to not
buy them.If you're under the age of 50 and you’ve got the body to
pull it off (like hottie moms Demi Moore and insanely fit Madonna)…I say, “Get going.”Just know your limitations and be cautious of dressing too
young.Because doing
so can back fire in the worst way and actually speed up time.So to avoid a fashion mishap, here are just a few “dos”
and “don’ts” for dressing up your skinny jeans.1.Your
daughter wears UGG boots with her jeans and tee.You steer clear of these chunky moon boots-waaaayyyy
too young.Instead, go for a tailored blazer, beautiful blouse, and
fabulous ankle booties for a more sophisticated, grown up style.2.Your
daughter layers hers with a tunic dress and fringed leather boots. You pair yours with a chic sweater
coat and finish it with richly-colored
pumps.3.
However you wear it... Never,
ever, ever choose anything that shows off too much skin-so
inappropriate and way out of style. Just be sure to save
some of the trendier pieces for her and incorporate more
classic styles into your wardrobe and you'll look
oh-so-fabulous no matter your age.

Hello From Cali!
It’s just after 1:00am and I’m finally
winding down (three cups of java-definitely the magic equation). As you know, we’ve relocated to the Los Angeles area and
this past week has been quite an adjustment for our family.
With stuffed boxes to unpack and NY Fashion

one to swing.Tuesday
arrived…it’s our son’s first day of school. He’s the new kid in town.I just couldn’t imagine missing his big day. What kind of parent would I be?NY Fashion Week or our son?You know I chose the latter.
So I proudly hold the title of“Mommy of the Year.”As for fabulous New York, Bryant Park, glam fashions, celeb

On the Move
It's official... We're moving out
West where the palm trees grow and the sun always shines (okay,
maybe not always). Nonetheless, it's been one hectic month
as we attempt to make this transition. More madness, New
York Fashion Week is just around the corner!
Yikes!!!
So for the next week, we'll be taking a
brief vacation to settle into town. But please check back soon for
the latest Fashion Week happenings. I hear rapper LL Cool J
is making another appearance-this time with Sears
featuring his very own fashion line.

Q: I've been a stay-at-home
Mom for the past eight years, but will be starting a new job
soon. I'm in need of a professional wardrobe and have no
idea where to begin. Where can I find quality professional
clothing at a reasonable price?
Carol St. Paul, MN
A: When shopping for a
professional wardrobe, it's important to keep a couple factors in
mind (especially if you're working with
a limited budget). The
best way to maximize your dollars is to always spend less on
trendier pieces and splurge on the classics. These staples
include tailored suits, blazers/jackets, pants, pencil skirts, and
the essential white dress shirt. Quality pieces will
last
for years so be prepared to allot the majority of your budget for
these items. Retailers such Ann
Taylor and Banana Republic
are both reasonably priced and offers a well edited selection of
suits and separates. Also, check out Club
Monaco at MOA forbeautiful,
updated classics. And for the hottest looks of the season, H&M
never fails to deliver. Stock up on Fall florals, graphic
blouses, and comfy cardis to round out your work wardrobe.

Q: I hate shopping for jeans!I’ve tried on more styles than you can count.I’m one of those unfortunate people with a little butt
and nothing seems to fit right. At this point, I’m willing to spend whatever it takes for
the perfect pair.Can
you please suggest some brands that would work for me?Thanks!Casey
Maryland
A:
Jeans continue to be a popular discussion on this
blog.And with denim
designers constantly pushing out the latest styles, where does one
start?But it
doesn’t have to be so daunting. While not everyone will agree having a “little butt” is
unfortunate, bootie-flattering styles are definitely out there. The most important factors to consider are the back pockets
and placement itself.Look for little “extras” such as embellishments,
embroidery, and back flap pockets to enhance your derriere. The more details-the more oomph you’ll have.Jeans with higher back pockets will also give your bootie a
major lift.And be
aware, lower placements will do just the opposite.Furthermore, skinny and snug fit styles (especially with a
lower rise) will do wonders to enhance and add more “junk”
where needed.The top

Macy's Glamorama 08: High Top
Sneakers
Whether you like them or not....
There's no denying high top sneakers are back. Guys want to
know, "should we or shouldn't we?" Fellas over 30,
I would use extreme caution (particularly with poufy
styles). If you plan on rockin these for Glamorama,
you better have the right ensemble to pull it off.
Unless you're starring in a hip hop video, spinning records on the
turntables or competing on America's Best Dance Crew,
I would stay far, far away from these bad boys. Low top
styles (think Run DMC's Adidas Super Stars') are much
more appropriate and look just as fresh.
The big event is just days away...so get to
shopping already!

Macy's Glamorama 08: 80s Rewind
With MC Hammer and Cyndi Lauper as
headliners, you know Glamorama’s going full on 80s this year. But before you revive those cuffed acid-washed jeans, keep
in mind this is a fashion event.Lawd knows I rocked the poufy perm and fell victim to
“Hammer pants” (a fashion disaster I never want to relive),
but this is no costume party.
This season,
designers
are bringing the 80s spirit. But it’s all about high
fashion.
So get inspired and channel your inner rocker
or best “Material Girl.”Go chic with lace, minis or voluminous dresses, and bring
back the leather and hardware.Because this season’s “Glam” is far from the iconic
80s-it’s looking forward with a whole lot of edge.

Ask the Stylist
Q: A co-worker is throwing a
dinner party and I'd like to know what is appropriate to
wear. I don't know her well, but she always looks so put
together. Would jeans and a nice blouse be okay?
Thanks! Taylor Minneapolis, MN
A: Normally, I would say,
"yes." Dark washed jeans look especially chic with a
feminine blouse and great pumps. But for this dinner party,
let's take it up a notch. How often does one have the
opportunity to dress up anyway? Instead of jeans, go for a
black classic, curve-hugging, pencil
skirt. High-waist styles are perfect for
lengthening and maximizes a tiny waist line. Pair that with
a silky
or blousy top and finish the look with a fantastic structured
jacket, flirty peep-toes, and a great clutch.
Just be sure to minimize the "skin" factor and you've
got a polished yet sexy evening look. Because we all
know...it's never fabulous to outdo the hostess.

Farewell Jovovich-Hawk
With five years under their belts,
model-actress turned fashion designer, Milla Jovovich and former
model Carmen Hawk are calling it quits. In the September issue of Lucky,
Jovovich explains, “I’m in a time of rediscovery, from my
career to personal style.”
A bombshell given that Fred Segal
snatched up their very first collection, which nearly sold out
instantly.Their
namesake line is a favorite amongst exclusive retailers such as Shopbop,
Net-a-Porter, Revolve Clothing, and countless
boutiques across the country. And what about their recent collaboration with Target
released March of this year?As the retailer’s tenth GO International Designers
offering limited-edition pieces, surely that was enough to launch
their brand to mega stardom.
Personally, I would like to see the line
continue.Their
swingy cocktail and easy summer dresses offered a fresh, feminine
look with a touch of whimsy.Perhaps a mini vacation is in order, but please come back

Denim for Tall Men
I get a call last week from my good friend,
"Why doesn't anyone make nice clothes for tall guys?
Just because you're tall, they think you're wide too."
Now, you're thinking "how tough can it really be?"
For
a guy standing nearly 7 feet tall, it's no easy task.
Ladies, we gripe about our search for the perfect pair of
jeans...consider yourselves privileged. Petite, tall, or
plus size-we're covered. It seems his selections have been reduced to the
only store carrying the obvious Casual
Male XL and some lonely little shop in his area.
I've viewed the inventory at the aforementioned...I hear you my
friend!
Working with my 6'5" client, we too
found selections to be limited to just a few stores. Our
only other alternative was to go online, which was quite
successful. So to my friend and fellow tall men...it's time
to log in and start shopping. I did some digging for the
best online "Tall" retailers available, and here's what
I found:
Bananarepublic.com
In need of a brand new wardrobe? BR has an amazing selection
of everything you'll need from office staples to everyday casuals
with premium style jeans. You can always count on quality
and the fit-just right with no worries of too short hemlines.
Nordstrom.com
Designer styles including fantastic suits and sportcoats by
BOSS and Ben Sherman with chic premium denim.

All Mankind 'Dark New York'

Rochesterclothing.com
Rochester Big & Tall carries designers such as Ermenegildo
Zegna and John Vavatos Star
USA, plenty of stylish
shoes, and offers the largest selection of denim with
36"-38" inseams including AG Adriano Goldschmied to
the more affordable, Levi's.
Oldnavy.com
Mega retailer, Old Navy has done it again! Now, tall
guys can get in on the deals. It's all the latest styles at
amazingly affordable prices. Inseams run up to 36".
So start there....you should
find just the right pieces to help you transition into the Fall
season. And if you're still at a loss, I'm only an email

Botkier vs. Botkier for Target
Above all the designers dishin out handbags
for Target, Botkier
was the one collection I couldn't wait to get my hands on.
You may have noticed, I'm a huge fan of Monica
Botkier, famed photographer turned handbag
designer. Her keen focus on detail combined with
functionality are clearly reflected in her designs. Each
season, devotees can expect luxurious leather bags offered with
just the perfect balance of hardware. Anything more would be
excessive. And who needs to haul around an extra five pounds
of metal?
In-stores since July 20th and available
through September 14th-not all styles have been accessible
until now. So here's the lowdown on the latest limited
edition designer handbags by Botkier
for Target.
My top pick: the Gray
Python Satchel. A deal at $39.99, the faux
snakeskin could certainly pass for the sure thing and there's no
shortage of designer details. Color is much lighter and
prettier in-person. By far, the hottest bag from the
collection. Although fantastic in design (specially the
hobos), other styles fall seriously short of
"wow." Similar to many limited edition bags
offered at Target, the materials are cheap, cheap, cheap.
Everything is made of PVC plastic-translation pleather-ish
(understandably why they're priced so low). Remember
Loeffler Randall?
As exciting as these collabos are, the
thrill is usually short-lived. Target, next time
around....could you please give the designers better materials to
work with? I'd take a patent, canvas or glazed finish any day.

Fashion Focus: Fall Leather Jackets
On my shopping list this season and one
item worthy of a major splurge-leather bomber jackets. An
80s resurgence without all that excess hardware, these styles are
chic and edited perfectly with minimal pockets and with stylish details.
Think skinny jeans paired with printed or
floral blouses and peep-toe ankle booties for day. Over a
feminine dress, evening styles are unexpectedly edgy with a sweet
girl twist. To maintain overall proportion, be sure to keep
hemlines mini length to just above the knees. Pile on the
bangles with ultra high heels and a metallic clutch, and you're ready to
party!
Q: My husband and I are going
to a wedding next month. I want to make sure he looks great,
but it's difficult to find a suit that fits him well. He's
not the tallest guy in the world which is challenging. We're
willing to spend more for a quality suit. Any ideas of where
to shop or what to look for? Thank you! Kelly
Minnetonka, MN
A: The reality is it's almost
impossible for anyone to find a suit that fits perfectly
off-the-rack. Unless your husband has similar measurements
as the fit model, be prepared for some major alterations. As
you shop, look for details that are proportionate to his frame as
well as height. Avoid suits in black and opt for jackets
with narrow lapels, three-button styles to extend his torso, and
with sleek flat front pants. Light-colored and narrow
stripes on shirts are his best picks as they will draw the focus
up top and won't overwhelm. Stay clear of ties with thick,
wide stripes. Finer versions or delicate florals would be
perfect for this occasion. But most importantly, it's all
about the fit. Department stores such as Neiman
Marcus, Macys, and Nordstrom all carry high-end quality
suits and with expert in-house tailoring services available. Now
for the shoes?

Suited for Style
New York City...fast-paced, exuberant, and
always on the edge of style. Each visit to this city
never fails to incite inspiration for my line of work. The
streets are packed with stylish residents in the hottest fashions
and fashionista's simply aren't the only ones dressing to
impress. From gents to top execs, men are also making a
statement of their own.
This
weekend's The New York Times featured a delightful
look at some of these stylish men-each one impeccably dressed in
their suit. Flawless in fit with evidence of fine tailoring
finished with notable plays on accessories. And dare they
wear white from head-to-toe! These guys have it and we want
more.
There's nothing sexier than a sharp dressed
man. If hubby would just indulge me, his closet would be
filled with beautiful, fine suits. But one thing at a time
(it's a process). So here's a little style
inspiration from the sexy men of New York City. Please take
note fellas and enjoy!
Designer goods for a
"steal"...the Nordstrom
Anniversary Sale is really that seriiiiouuus!!!!
It's the shopping event of the year,
yet I haven't done a lick of
it for myself (that darn "no shopping while you're at
work" policy sure is a tricky one to uphold).
From tall boots to cutie ankle booties,
luxurious leather bags in lush Fall colors (including one very
fabulous Chloe tote with my name on it), exquisite transitional pieces for Fall, and fabulous coats galore. Guys, check out
the sportcoats for incredible deals and prices on premium denim
are amazing!
If you've never done the sale before, make
time for it. High style for less...there's no reason to miss
this one. Just be prepared to "throw down" for
that fabulous bag (not really, but the perfect one can be
yours).

Ask the Stylist
Q: I prefer boutiques over big
department stores and malls because of the quality of
service. But recently, I've had to make some budget changes
and would like to know if there are any local retailers carrying a
mix of both high and lower-priced items. Thanks! Anonymous
Stillwater, MN
A: With shorter lines and
fewer crowds, boutiques definitely offer a more intimate shopping
experience. But that also means there's a limited range of
selections and price points. And with our changing economy,
combining high and low pieces into your wardrobe is the way to
go. Karma
off Grand Ave in St. Paul happens to carry a fabulous mix of
both. Designers include Rebecca Beeson to chic and totally
affordable, Tulle. Take a peek at their fantastic jewelry
selection as well as designer handbags and shoes by
Seychelles. Although if budget is a concern, may I also
suggest expanding your shopping options. While intimidating
in size, department stores such as Nordstrom
always has a great selection and in various price points. In
addition, you may want to check out their annual Anniversary
sale happening tomorrow, July 18th through August 3rd. The
savings are absolutely worth the trip!

Fall Trends Have "Fringe"
Benefits
Scorching Summer heat and the AC on
high...no matter. Fashion's ever-revolving trends have
our sights set on Fall. A hot teaser this season...flirty, swingy fringe.
Let the thrill begin! Whether dangling from
"booties" or handbags, it's
an accessories sensation. When bold metals merge with
ultra-fine leather accented with fringe, the look is
western-inspired meets hard edge chic.
One of the sweetest bags on the market and
fabulously edited with divine trickles of fringe is Botkier's
Morgan Large Satchel. Available in this season's
hottest shade of rich purple. Grab the black for ultimate
versatility.

Post-Baby Style
It's been years since I've been in
"baby" mode and far from the worries of having to wear
elastic-waisted jeans. But with the recent baby boom in
Hollywood and the births of Angelina Jolie's
twins, pregnancy style has been given a fair amount of
attention-on and off the Red Carpet.
This season's maxi dresses ruled for
soon-to-be-mommies and the empire versions were especially
flattering. However, there's been little talk about what to
wear post-baby. And with weight loss varying significantly
amongst women, transitioning to "normal" clothes can be
a rather uninspiring task. So what do we wear to conceal
those lingering pounds of baby love? Are we back to
maternity wear?
Despite what many may think (even with a
gain of 55 pounds like myself), there are plenty of stylish
non-maternity choices available to get you through the in-between
phase. And to prove it, below are just a few styles that
will take you effortlessly from a day at the park to evening
worthy events.
Inspired by this weekend's Jolie-Pitts baby
news... These pieces combine Angelina's classic style with
sexy, feminine staples that are just right for new Mommies.
What makes them "work" are the ease of the
fabrics- allowing for movement and providing added coverage
where needed.
Take the guesswork out of what to wear
with this stylish yet comfy floor length 'Betty
Block Dress by French Connection'. Add flat
sandals for day or metallic heels for an evening
look.
photo/frenchconnection.com
With tops this sweet, why not
skip the tee? In fresh peony, soft knits like this Ella
Moss Top makes the perfect "go to" everyday
staple.
photo/revolveclothing.com
"Date night"
chic. Silky, fluid tops like this 'Mint
Shirred Front Cami' are the perfect match to skinny
denim and ultra high heels. Add a structured blazer for
extra coverage and be sure to pile on the bangles.
photo/jodiarnoldnyc.com
Beyond stunning.
Semi-structured shape does double duty to minimize problem areas
while maintaining maximum curves. Gorgeous covered jewel appliqué
adorns the neckline and a tie waist gracefully finishes the
look. From charity events to Summer weddings, this
'Mint Jodi Arnold Tie Waist Dress' is a splendid
addition. Available in 4 fabulous colors.

Q: I’ve noticed a lot of guys wearing sunglasses
at night.I think it
looks good, but is that okay to do? Michael Eden Prairie,
MN
A:
Really, it depends on the guy.Forget that wearing sunglasses at night may limit one’s
vision.These days,
it’s the accessory that makes the ensemble. They’ve been popping up indoors and seen at nightclubs. Thanks, to celebrities like Sean “Diddy” Combs. In fact, it’s rare to see him without sunglasses given
they’ve become a part of his image. That goes for just about any person (especially celebs) in
the public eye.Although
not immune to fashion disasters, celebrities tend to be risk
takers and are often regarded as trendsetters. But that doesn’t always translate well to us
“regular” folks.My
advice would be if you’re a guy who’s used to a little extra
attention and it suits your personal style-then go for it.Just consider the varying shades of lenses and choose a
color that’s right for the occasion. Now, if it seems out of character for you, sunglasses at
night may come off as tacky and an obvious attempt at “he’s
trying way too hard.”So
go with your instincts on this one. You’ll know whether or not it's the right look for you.

Appropriate Summertime Shoes
Crocs as sandals and tall boots in July…Summer’s shoe selections are definitely stirring some
interesting debates.I’m
all for self-expression and allowing your wardrobe to make a
statement.But I
cringe at the very thought.
Crocs
aren’t a new revelation. You’ve seen them everywhere (evidently genius marketing
involved) from the grocery stores, malls to parks.Certainly, appropriate for boating, gardening or yard work,
and just darling on children. But the applause stops there.
The overwhelming response, “they’re so
comfortable.”But
does comfort really have in come in a plastic, holey package? And dare I mention the high-heeled version?Anything that chunky made out of plastic should never be
considered as chic nor worthy of a $49.99 price tag.May I suggest chic flats or sandals as alternatives.
Equally absurd this time of the season…tall
boots.This
weekend’s temps reached in the 90s with extreme humidity.Yet, there they were paired with laced stockings, mini
dress, and topped with a hoodie.Clearly, 80s inspired rocker chic and well put-together
ensemble.For
Fall!!!
So to avoid a fashion violation...please put
those awful Crocs and stuffy boots away.Instead, include cool sandals into your summertime
rotation.Your feet
will thank you!

Q: I've always worn sarongs
over my
swimsuits and it seems everyone I know is wearing them
too. Are they still in style?
I'm going on vacation soon and need some ideas for
beach cover-ups. Thanks! Linda Minneapolis, MN
A: Sarongs have definitely
been around and you'll see them in just about every swim boutique
and department store. But if you're looking for something
different, the chicest beach cover-ups are ones resembling mini
dresses. Printed sheer styles like this 'Echo
Silk Chiffon Cover-Up' brings versatility and
sophistication to solid-colored suits. Chic, flowy design
gives it such a breezy poolside look. So naughty and
everything nice is this 'B
Swim Lace Cover-Up Dress'. Worn with solids or
printed suits, this one is sure to turns heads. Stylish,
family-friendly, and complete with darling details...this 'Eberjey
Hot Tamale Tube Dress' is
the one to have.

Steal of the Week: Mommy
Must-haves
It's a heat wave! So get ready to
shed those layers. Translation parents...it's time to stock
up on the sunscreen, line up those Summer essentials, and prepare
for a full schedule of outdoor fun.
This weekend's 4th of July celebration is
no exception. Whether you're sampling goodies at the annual
"Taste of Minnesota", hosting a backyard bash or
relaxing poolside, going casually chic is a definite must.
This week's "steal" includes Summer staples with Mommy
in mind. We're talking stylish, comfortable, and easy
casuals that can handle all the demands of being a
parent.
This season, be sure to include chic tanks
and fabulous day dresses to your shopping list. Look for
styles in wonderful color that can withstand a little dribble or
two like this smartly
designed 'C
& C Chloe Tank'. It
offers
a fantastic two-in-one layered look with a contrasting racerback tank.
And at this price, why not order another color? Add feminine sensibility
to your Summer wardrobe with this 'Spring
Blossom Summer Dress'. Fabric drapes beautifully
over your curves and empire style is absolutely flattering-the
perfect choice for all your Summer events.

Q: My husband only wears
sneakers with his shorts and refuses to wear sandals. I've
given up on trying to change him.
Can you suggest some
styles that are more updated and not so casual? Becca San
Diego, CA
A: As long as he's not wearing
athletic
sneakers
with his shorts...please say it isn't
so. These hefty styles are reserved only for aerobic
exercise and would be an absolute fashion no-no. For the
sake of the marriage, I agree it's a worthy compromise and some
battles are just better left alone. Surprisingly, shorts and
sneakers are a fantastic combo with just the right pair of
shoes. The way to go...retro-inspired, low-top style sneaks
in a great neutral white color. Top picks come in fantastic
laced or slip-on styles and look incredibly chic with either cargo
or linen shorts. As for his next shopping trip...a good
nudge may in order. Good luck to you!

Steal of the Week: Boys Graphic Tees
As a Target
loyal, I should have made this discovery much sooner
than now. Without question, I'm there each week for
something or another (really, it's an addiction). So
how could I have neglected the boys department?
If you've read this blog, you'll know I'm
always on the search for something "cool" for my little
man. And with a spirited 5-year-old, you can never have
enough choices-especially in "play" clothes. While
zipping through the isles, a display of skull-filled tees
literally stops me in my tracks. Our son would die for
these! Some were a bit much for his age, but the printed
neon "pin"
t-shirt... so 80's inspired, edgy, and beyond
cool! Sold!
Admittedly, I've spent more than necessary
for "play" clothes, but what parent hasn't? These
graphic tees won't have you thinking twice. Designer worthy
styles for less-definitely a good thing. So go ahead,
spend less and save more for the college tuition (you'll need
it). I'll be heading back
for more.

Weekend Summer Sales
A "steal" finder I am. This
weekend, while everyone's suiting up for the beach I'm making a
detour to the nearest malls for some serious hot Summer
sales. Ohhhh yeah...it's worth skipping fun in the sun when
the savings are this good. And don't worry, these styles
aren't last season's big winners. They're right on trend so
get moving while the pickin's HOT!
Just two months after their Galleria Edina
grand opening, BCBG Max Azria
is already offering huge reductions 30-70% off everything from
apparel, jewelry, handbags to shoes. For additional
selections, check out their online
store where you'll also find sweet teeny weeny
bikinis. If you're on the hunt for great tops and dresses,
stop in at Arden
B where the styles are
fresh and perfect for the season. And this weekend's power
shopping wouldn't be complete without a stop at one of my favorite
retailers, Banana
Republic with
sales up to 50% off. Their premium style jeans are super
chic and beyond affordable-just the perfect everyday staple for
this on-the-go Mommy.

Ask the Stylist
Q: Can you suggest anything
else other than shorts and a t-shirt for outdoor parties? I
want to look nice, but also don't want to overdress for the
occasion. I'm open to any
ideas you may have. Thanks! Melissa Eagan, MN
A: Yes! Summer is
finally here (okay, so it officially begins on Saturday).
But you can expect a backyard barbeque just about every weekend
until the end of Labor Day. Now, I wouldn't disregard shorts
all together. They're definitely comfortable and perfect for
hot weather months. Your concern would be in finding the right
tops or blouses to dress it up. Instead of the cotton tees,
look for pieces that offer interesting detail or prints.
This alone will take your casual style to the next level.
Darling tops like this Twelfth
St by Cynthia Vincent or Juicy
Couture Floral Front Tie Camisole look modern yet
offers a dash of sex appeal. And these pieces have amazing
versatility for your entire wardrobe. But if you're really over
shorts, daytime Summer dresses are also a fantastic
alternative. This silk/cotton dress from BCBG
Max Azria is the perfect mix of comfort and
style. Just remember to finish the looks with fabulous flat sandals or
hot wedges.

Look Who's Wearing
Guess who's been spotted around town in
their color-blocked Black Halo
dress? People.com
wants your vote on "who wears it better." Audrina
Patridge raises the bar with a shortened mini hemline, while Jenny

Jen for showing us that more (skin) isn't always better.

Q: I'd like to find some cute
blouses for the Summer. I've always been smaller up top and
it seems everything I buy makes me look even more flat-chested. Implants are not an option and I'm hoping you
can lead me in the right direction. Thanks!
Erin Minneapolis, MN
A: Some are more blessed than
others, and it creates a bit of a challenge for us
"smaller" girls. But you don't have to be Pamela
Anderson "big" to look fantastic in your clothes.
Just a few minor details is all it takes to add the volume
you so desire. Halter necklines, flouncy ruffles, and
pretty pleats along the neckline will give you plenty of
boost. The folds and layers create an "uplifting"
appeal without any cosmetic surgery. Now, how painless
is that?

Q: I'm very petite and wear a size
5 in shoes. I've been searching for the perfect pair of
black heels that will look great with jeans and skirts. But
finding shoes in my size has been such a challenge. Do you
have any suggestions? M.T. Seattle, WA
A: Minimize the headaches and
hit the web. There's never any pressure to buy and you can
shop at your convenience. Favorite "go to" online
shoe retailers include endless.com
which carries sizes 3-16 with a fantastic selection of heels at
affordable prices, piperlime.com
sizes range from 4-12, and zappos.com with
a large selection of lower to higher-end shoes in sizes
3-18. And there's no worries about fit since all three
retailers offer free shipping and returns.
Worn with jeans, skirts, dresses or
shorts...these sky highs from Charles
by Charles David are unbelievably versatile with
gorgeous texture and style. Sexy t-strap and exotic skin
makes this the perfect choice for a night on the town.

or white mini shorts paired with fluid printed tops.

2008 MTV Movie Awards Gold Carpet:
So Fresh & Hot Mess
With Mike Myers hosting this year's MTV
Movie Awards, Sunday's show definitely goes down as one of the
most memorable productions in network history. There were
some questionable moments like the gone-too-far skit by Ben
Stiller, Jack Black, and Robert Downey Jr (those who watched will know exactly what I mean). Highlights included the
Generation Award presented to Adam Sandler by a very gracious Tom
Cruise, the hilarious return of "Wayne's World" with
Dana Carvey, and an insane performance by English rock band,
Coldplay.
But the best part of the award show goes to
the stylish and not-so-hot Gold Carpet arrivals. Here's who
made the SO FRESH and HOT MESS list.
SO FRESH
photo/tvguide.com
Will and Jaden Smith:
The best dressed duo on the MTV Gold Carpet. Both
looking SO FRESH in their jackets, super fly "kicks",
and aviators. It's preppy meets hip-hop chic.
Fatherhood never looked so cool.
photo/mtv.com
Charlize Theron: Absolutely
majestic and ready to throw down in a gold metallic bustier, black
skinny pant, and mighty gladiators. I'd definitely want her
on my team. This look is "Super Bad" from
head-to-toe.
photo/mtv.com
Paris Hilton: The
princess of all things fabulous gave her sweetest "bad
girl" pose in a strapless black-laced Betsey Johnson mini
dress. Playing up her girly image, this look is perfectly
fitting with Benji's hard edge style. Just promise to go HOT
in color for the next Red Carpet event. "Rocker"
doesn't always have to be black and
white.
photo/mtv.com
Heidi Montag: "The
Hills" love to hate resident made the list in an ultra sexy burgundy
Herve Leger mini. Loved the stone and gold studded ankle
stilettos. I know...stop it already. Don't blame
me. I'm here to rate the styles-not "star"
status. But what girl wouldn't look insanely hot in this
"bandage" dress?
HOT MESS
photo/mtv.com
Anne Hathaway:
Oscar's best dressed girl... Where do I begin? It's
MTV and you're going for an edgier look. It's
intentional- I get it. But this leather Sophia Kokosalaki
mini paired with
corporate style pumps clearly missed the mark. What happened
to the "tough girl" cuffs and heels with rockin
hardware? Sooooo off on this one. But props to Anne
for taking a fashion leap from her usual classic style.
photo/mtv.com
Liv Tyler: The combination of
hot pink along with fierce leopard print Louboutins should have
been a sure winner. Strapless style and short hemline shows
off her best assets. But this drapey Lanvin
dress appeared
super boxy and failed her curves miserably. An empire
silhouette created by a wide belt would have been the perfect
adjustment.

New York's SATC Movie Premiere
Talk of the town....last week's much hyped
and anticipated premiere of "Sex and
the City: The Movie" at Radio City Music
Hall. According to US
Magazine, a woman from Japan shelled out a whopping
$52,100 just to attend the event. Talk about dedication!
At least the winnings went to a worthy cause.
The girls graced the Pink Carpet in Fred Leighton
jewels and exquisite couture: SJP in a shimmery
silver strapless Nina Ricci gown , Kristin Davis opted for gold in Donna
Karan, Cynthia Nixon in a delicate white Narciso Rodriguez halter
dress, and Kim Cattrall simply stunning in Vivienne Westwood.

Steal of the Week: Hot Summer Jewels
When it come to high fashion, Old Navy

Summertime baubles. Long, dangling pieces such as this 'Smoke
Earth Stone Necklace' features a splendid carved
pendant and delightful gold charm-perfect for that LWD (little
white dress) or intense neons, and brights.

Clusters of smoke, gold-tone,
and clear beads swing perfectly from these 'Tear-Drop

little darlings add a flirty touch to any ensemble and transitions
easily from day to evening. Available in 3 different colors.

from graduation celebrations to dinner for two. Simply
divine is this 'Goldengirl

Ask the Stylist
Q: I'm horrible with jewelry
selection and would like help with what works with my
bright-colored tops and dresses. Thanks! Jess St.
Paul, MN
A: When it comes to
jewelry...it's all about personal preference and style. For
this seasons brights, earthy wooden accents and brilliant gold
metals look best. And in this case, more isn't always
better. Just a little simple addition like a bangle or cuff
can transform your entire look from day to night. This Rachel
Leigh Wooden Bangle is the perfect mix of cool Boho
chic and beach front style. Switch it up for evening and add
instant glam with this gold hammered cuff by Tracy
Matthews. The idea is to never over do it.
Allow one piece as your "wow factor" and keep the others
minimal to compliment the look.

SJP's Hat Stirring Frenzy Around the
World
If you weren't a fan of "Sex and the
City," at least now the movie and Sara Jessica Parker's hat
has gotten your attention. It's no wonder she's the show's
standout girl. SJP single handedly dominated the Red Carpet
at Monday's London Premier of "Sex
and the City: The Movie."
As if Alexander McQueen's pale green
one-of-a-kind dress wasn't enough to wow the crowd, SJP topped off
her ensemble with a shockingly peculiar bouquet of a hat. An
acorn topper swarming with butterflies, oversized green rose
bloom, and peacock feathers-outrageous is an understatement.
No, stylist Patricia Field didn't have her hands on this
one. Leave it to Parker herself to channel her inner
"Carrie Bradshaw" -staying true to her fiercely quirky
character. Only SJP can pull this off! Because in real
life, in the real world, should this ever be duplicated.
Remember folks...she's a fashion icon, who gets to play dress up
for television and movies. After all, it's "Sex and the
City"...have you seen it? Unlike any other Red Carpet
event, this hat is the perfect bold choice and absolute PR genius!

Ask the Stylist
Q: I'm a new a Mom in my late
20's and getting closer to my pre-baby size. I still have a
little more weight to lose but want something besides the same old
boring t-shirts and hoodies to wear. Please
help! Lisa Maple Grove, MN
A: I agree...tees are great
everyday staples and hoodies serve their purpose, but they can
definitely become bland. This season, look for tops and
tanks in sophisticated prints to liven your wardrobe. This 'Yada
Top' by Trina Turk features a bold, striking design,
ultra stunning neckline, and just enough sex appeal for this new
Mommy. Soft, flowy style defines your shape yet wonderful
for concealing any
problem areas. The look is effortlessly chic with white
cropped jeans or mini shorts and flat metallic sandals.
Similar tops can also be found at Nordstrom
MOA or Len
Druskin in The Galleria Edina.

Ask the Stylist
Q: I'm 5 months pregnant and
already feeling huge. Is there anything besides elastic-waisted
jeans that will look cute on me at this stage of the
pregnancy? Thanks! Krista Minneapolis, MN
A: Certainly! These days
the options are plenty and ultra stylish for soon-to-be
Moms. And you won't have to be restricted to just maternity
wear. You've got a few more months to go so now is the time
to stock up. My choice for you is the maxi dress. Look
for empire-waisted styles like this T-Bags
or Nine
West version. The banded waist highlights your
upper body and shoulders while fabric drapes wonderfully over your
growing belly. These dresses have just enough movement for
comfort and ease and is perfectly in trend with the season.
So get shopping and enjoy the remainder of your pregnancy in
style.

Stylin' Kelly Ripa
So I've got a little dish on morning talk
show hostess cutie, Kelly Ripa. It's not dirty dirt (nor
news for avid viewers), but more reason to tune in each and every
morning. Fans of Live with Regis
and Kelly don't just check in for the laughs, but it's
Kelly's wardrobe that's got fashionistas hooked.
And who doesn't adore that she's a Mommy of three and still
workin' what her
Mama gave her? So if you've ever wondered what she's wearing
on the show...now you can thanks to Kelly's
Fashion Finder. And
a lesson for petites...no more complaining about "nothing
fits me" or "everything is so long on me."
Kelly is proof that you don't have to be super tall to look
fabulous!

Steal of the Week: Mighty Gladiator
Sandals
It's shoes and more shoes...can you ever
have enough? As you may have discovered, I'm a fanatic about
this season's sandals-in particular the
"gladiator." From comfy flat styles to
super-highs, there's something strong, confident, and fiercely
daring about them. Perhaps intimidating for some, but for
the fearless these sandals combine the perfect dose of comfort
meets fabulousness.
So utterly versatile, these 'Leather
Circle Gladiators' provide
just enough coverage for your toes and pairs
beautifully with mini shorts and cool summer knit dresses as well as
your premium jeans. The white pair is the perfect compliment
to this season's bright wardrobe. Above all, you can grab these for just
$38.

Ask the Stylist
Q: I have a wedding to attend
next month and need a fabulous dress. I'm in my late 30's
and would like something sexy but not over-the-top. Any
dress ideas and retailers in town I can try? Thanks! Amy
Eden Prairie, MN
A: Because this is a
wedding...it's important to keep in mind this is "her"
day. Certainly, your dress should be memorable, but be cautious to
never outshine the bride. Opt for pretty florals or wonderful
pales and stay clear of this season's neons or vivid prints.
Of course, the always appropriate LBD would be perfect for this
occasion. A new take on the little black dress is this
stunning creation by Black
Halo available at Neiman
Marcus. It combines the classic sheath with a
sexy, curve-hugging shape and modern cut-out back topped with a
touch of color. Other local retailers with a fantastic
selection of dresses: Epitome
and Arafina at The Galleria in
Edina and Nordstrom at The
Mall of
America.

Eco-Friendly = Eco-Fabulous
What does it really mean to "Go
Green?" For those involved in the movement, it's a
lifestyle that impacts all of us. From the foods we consume
to the clothes on our backs, going green is an initiative that
makes a difference.
Fashion designers and retailers have also
joined the cause by creating pieces that are not only stylish, but
eco-friendly. In honor of Earth Day,
you can help save the planet and look fabulous with these
oh-so-green finds.
Phillip Lim delivers with an exclusive Go
Green Go line for Barneys. Made of organic cotton jersey,
this 'Seed
Fold-Tier Tank' features a fantastic scalloped
seed-embroidered neckline, and lovely fold-tier hem. So
effortlessly chic with little twill shorts and gladiator
sandals.
photo/barneys.com
Another Barneys
exclusive. This 'Elisha
Trench' by Theory for Barneys Green comes in a great
mid-length and decidedly sophisticated day or night.
photo/barneys.com
Who says going green has to
cost a fortune? Coming to a Target nearest you...the next
GO International designer on the roster-Rogan
Gregory. The designer behind labels Loomstate and Edun
and recent recipient of the prestigious CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund
Award is expected to premier his eco-friendly line on May
18th. The collection will include Summer essentials
filled
with leopard print shorts, tanks, skirts to swimsuits. And of course
black jeans.

Steal of the Week: Bermuda Shorts
As temperatures rise...you know what that
means? It's shorts season! This week's
"steal" highlights a style that's flattering on most-
the always fashionable bermudas. And at this incredible
price, looking fabulous is a breeze.
'New
York Denim Bermudas' succeed in both amazing style and
cut. Brilliant-colored tops add gorgeous contrast to this
dark wash. Finish the look with layered bangles and sweet
sandals.

'Broadway
Bermudas-Black Mini Stripe' takes
casual chic to another level of sophistication. A feminine
ruffled blouse or sexy halter makes this style perfect for that
Summer time affair.

Ask the Stylist
Q: I'm around 5'11", love
to wear heels, and have a very difficult time finding jeans long
enough to fit me. Are there any brands designed for taller
girls? Thanks! Anonymous
A: Finding the perfect pair of
jeans is a true lesson in patience. Not too many score just
the right fit on the first try. Add extra length to the
equation and we've got even a bigger challenge. But if
you're willing to spend a little more, I would suggest premium
styles by Seven
For All Mankind, Hudson,
and True
Religion. All are available
in an array of washes and with inseams up to 36". These
denim brands can also be found at most department stores and
boutiques. Now the fun is in trying them on!

Designer Britney Spears
Two blogs in one day? As much as I try to avoid celebrity gossip
(note trying), this one just happens to be fashion
focused. And as a parent myself, I can't help but have an
opinion on Ms Britney. Word is she's in talks with Ed
Hardy designer, Christian Audigier to collaborate on a
children's clothing line.
I'm all for having more choices for my
little man and Ed Hardy's line is definitely edgy. But this
celeb designer callabo just doesn't settle well with me (for
obvious reasons).
What's the gripe anyway? If it's fab...it's
okay, right? What
do you think? Will you buy the line?

Ask the Stylist
Q: I'm going to a dinner party and
my wife says I should look nice. What should I wear?
Thanks. Eric Eden Prairie, MN
A: When wifey says, "nice"
that usually means "dress to impress." For this
occasion, a sharp modern jacket, fresh shirt, dark-washed denim,
and great slip-on loafers is the way to go. When choosing a
jacket, it's all about quality and versatility.
So go ahead
and splurge. This distressed blazer by John
Varvatos looks fantastic any way you look at it.
For ultimate comfort and style, pair it with this BOSS
short-sleeve button down shirt. Only dark-washed jeans makes
it evening worthy. Anything lighter would be too
casual. And leave the sneaks for the club. These sleek
loafers
will add overall polish to your look.

Gryson Hits Target
Out with Loeffler Randall and in with
Gryson. There they were hanging on the shelves at
Target. Expected to release April 6th
through June 21st, Gryson handbags are now available in stores
(Woodbury location).
Fans of this luxury designer line can expect to pay a pretty
penny. But these limited-edition bags won't set you back too
far-prices range from $19.99 to $49.99. When it comes to
bags, it's all about the leather. In this case...faux
leather. Intricate rope and woven details, subtle brass
hardware, and a glazed finish makes this Target collabo a winner.
My top 2 from the collection:
photo/target.com
Black
Patent Woven Tote $49.99 Perfect for everyday with
all the luxe details of a designer bag. Has a much higher
sheen than shown in photo.
photo/target.com
Slate
Blue Clear Tote $34.99 Lighter in color than shown
(blue gray). Peek-a-boo clear side and larger size makes this a chic vacation bag or
perfect for that stylish Mommy.

Ask the Stylist
Q: I'm seeing a lot of color this
season and have no idea how to wear it. And what color
shoes? Thanks!
S.E. Minneapolis, MN
A: It's not as scary as you
may think. The key to making this work is to stick within
the same color family and apply the "2 to 1" rule.
That's 2 different colors combined with 1 neutral. Mix
primary colors (think Crayola crayon red, yellow, and blue) with
other primaries. One of my favorite combos are yellow and
green or yellow and blue. And the same applies to more
saturated and neon colors. This may include one bright
colored blouse with bold-colored bangles paired with jeans, and
finished with either hot white or
brilliant metallic sandals. Now you're ready for the season!

Intermix on Robertson
Have you ever wanted something so badly...wink,
wink hubby.
This fabulous Yigal
Azrouel leather jacket hung so sweetly near the windows
of Intermix. Photos do not serve this jacket
well. In-person, the color is richer, with exquisite
texture, and stunning details...perfection in every way. An
investment is amazing style, quality, and versatility. For
"my girls", this one is for you!

Flash, Lights...Robertson Blvd
Just getting back into the swing of things
after last week's LA trip. A heavy dose of sunshine and
balmy temps has made me spoiled...I've forgotten it's still
"winter" in Minnesota. No swingy palms, fruit
trees or lush greens here-just Mother Nature teasing us with a
game of "wait and see." But this trip has
inspired me...
Donned in my Cali girl style with breezy
blouse, skinny jeans, fabulous bag, and fierce pumps...I set off
to the uber chic, infamous Robertson Blvd. Lined
along this stretch is where you'll find cutie celebs like Paris
Hilton, Gwen Stefani to Jessica Alba browsing. Who would it
be this day?
The white, shady umbrellas and overwhelming
crowd announced we'd arrived at hot spot eatery, The Ivy.
Paparazzi and celeb hounds loitered closely while others stalked
nearby at chicy Kitson boutique. So surreal it was. I
expected the TMZ crew to pounce in any moment.
What's that? Ted
Baker? That's more my style. This British
designer's eponymous line has long been a favorite of mine.
A colorful display of whimsical dogs danced in the front boutique
windows. Inside, a cutie blonde Brit cheerfully greets us
while elegant chandeliers hung and the space
neatly lined with pieces that promises to not disappoint.
This flagship store carries a lavish selection of both menswear,
womenswear, shoes, and accessories. The Spring collection
boosts subtle prints for men and plenty of ruffles and feminine
styles for the girls. If you're a fan of the chic, fashion
forward styles of John Varvatos, Marc Jacobs, Vince or Alice +
Olivia...you'll love this boutique. And the pricepoint...just
right! Ted Baker makes my list of top shops on
Robertson. For those outside the LA area, a limited selection is
available online at revolveclothing.com,
urbanminx.com
and bluefly.com.
Kitson and
more Kitson...four separate boutiques under one name. I
couldn't resist taking a peek in each one. Mens...filled
with more graphic tees and Great China Wall than I've ever
seen in one place. The white leather skull-filled hoodie
caught my eyes...price nowhere to be found. "J" confirms
it's just around $1,200. Okaaay? Moving on... In accessories, it's a fashionista's haven. The selections were
much more impressive in-store than online. My girlfriend
wondered if I'd recognized the Asian lady-she looked so
familiar. Completely distracted by the glitz, I barely
caught a glimpse. "No one" I
respond. On our way out, I realize it's the ultra fabulous
designer Vera
Wang. On her celly, she was certainly distinctive
with her straight black hair, looking more New York than LA in her
minimal black ensemble, pale pink seamless jacket, black tights,
and black flats. And Kitson Kids...a fav among celeb mommys.
I had to find something for my little man. Although highly
publicized, I couldn't help but be turned off by the stacks and
stacks of tees. It felt more touristy then a high-end
children's boutique. There was no differentiating designers
as everything was in disarray. And for tees this pricey,
Kitson Kids could use some serious revamping. Fortunately, my very gracious
salesgirl was eager to help and made the experience tolerable.
Other boutiques to peek your interest...
Intermix-
another personal favorite with fabulous high-end and Red Carpet
worthy styles. Don't let the towering security guy
intimidate you. He's harmless. Just bring your credit
cards and indulge!
Paige- one of
my top denim designers. All her jeans and tops in one place.
Alice + Olivia-You
won't have to fly to New York to find the best selections.
This location has all the pieces you'll love.
Surly Girl- High End. High Maintenance. Enough said. You
want fantastic bags, clutches or jewelry-they've got it!
If you've never visited this boulevard,
it's a fashionista's delight. Mark it as your must-shop
destinations...you'll find everything you need topped with the occasional
celebrity sighting. Just be sure to bring comfy
shoes.
Thursday March 20, 2008
Ask the Stylist
Q: I love the look of longer tops
with jeans, but wonder if I can pull this off myself. I am
really short and would like to know if there are any rules that
apply to my height? Anonymous
A: Nothing is more unflattering than
an improper fit. And wearing pieces that
"drown" you certainly falls in that category. If
by "longer tops" you mean tunics...you'll be surprised
the answer is YES. Despite your concerns, petites 5' 4"
and under can easily accomplish this look. Hemlines for tops
should hit no longer than mid-thigh, worn with longer length jeans
that skim the floor, and paired with your highest heels to extend
your line. A little trickery for the eyes is all
you'll need to maintain ultimate style and provide proportion for
your petite frame.

Heels Worth the Agony?
So much talk about sandals this
season. I've been on the hunt for the perfect pair
myself. Forget comfort. I'm always willing to
sacrifice a little for the sake of fabulousness. Besides, running
in 3-inchers all these years has really amped my pain
tolerance. There hasn't been too many heels I couldn't
conquer.
It was pure joy when I discovered these
fantastic Pour
La Victoire sandals. With a hidden platform, it's
certain to provide some comfort. Color is the perfect
neutral when paired with jeans or Summertime dresses, and the
woven criss-cross leather straps are simply stunning.
In spite of this, my sensibility just will not allow
me to buy it. And it pains me to make such an
admittance...4.5" heels on these sweeties will not only
overpower my petite stature, but possibly throw my alignment out
of whack. So my search
continues. But for you taller gals, this glorious pair is a
fierce stunner and worth every penny!

Ask the Stylist
Q: I've always found heels to be
uncomfortable, but am willing to give it another try. Can
you suggest something stylish yet comfortable to wear this
season? C.M. Minneapolis, MN
A: Yes-as wonderful as kitten heels
and sky high stilettos are, they do little to provide
support. But don't discount heels all together. There
are certain styles that are both comfortable and fashionable. My
pick: the wedge. They are
designed to distribute your weight-hence reducing pressure from
one area of your foot. But be certain to choose a
stream-lined version to avoid looking too chunky. Start with
a lower heel, and if you dare...higher styles are also
surprisingly very comfortable.
Hot styles to look for this season...exotic
skins, metallics, bold colors, and patent leather. These
stunning wedges are sure add a playful punch to your vacation
shorts, cropped jeans and Spring dresses.

Transitional Must-Haves: Cardigans
Spring is quickly approaching. But
with snow still evident, many wonder what to wear this time of the
season. Heavy sweaters can get stuffy and bulky under thick
winter coats, and blouses do little to keep the chill away.
The great news is your Fall cardigans are
just the thing to help you ease into Spring. Soft, neutral,
and lightweight styles are the perfect pieces for layering with tees,
tanks, and blouses.

This driftwood cardigan by CeCe
look utterly sophisticated with Spring's brilliant colors. Layer it with punchy corals or
luscious raspberry for a fabulous daytime style. Lovely
fluid collar and airy back gathers make this an irresistible buy.

Q: I need a new coat for Spring. Are there any particular styles I should look
for? Thanks! A.L. Minneapolis, MN

statement coats in an array of fabulous colors, prints, and styles
loaded with all the special details a girl could want. A
style that never gets old is the classic trench. Get the
look for less with this amazing gray/navy floral
printed trench. The style is chic, feminine, and
much prettier in person. Another absolute favorite...this Juicy
Couture jacket modernized with fantastic texture,
gorgeous back pleats, and trimmed in pretty delicate
ruffles. See how amazing it looks over a dress in this

2008 Oscars Red Carpet: Best and Biggest
Mess
A slight trickle of rain did little to
damper this year's 80th Annual Academy Awards. Heck, a
nominee or not...it's another reason to get primped for a night of
glamour and get hit with a little Red Carpet action.
We're back with a recap of all the fabulous
fashion hits and misses at this year's Oscars! Here are the
starlets who made the list:
BEST
photo/Frank
Micelott/wireimage.com
Anne Hathaway: Oscar's
best dressed girl! Draped in a brilliant red one-shoulder
Grecian Marchesa gown.
The color complimented her porcelain skin flawlessly and cascading
rosettes along with sweeping drape are just pure perfection.
Simply her best Red Carpet look of all time!
photo/Frank
Micelott/wireimage.com
Jennifer Garner: Oscar
de la Renta definitely knows what a girl wants.
The shirred silk taffeta bodice and ruffled fishtail hemline highlights
Jennifer's amazing figure. And art deco style necklace
and blinged-out bracelets takes this look beyond!
photo/Juan
Ricco/Fame
Jessica Alba: In her
third trimester, this soon-to-be Mommy radiated in another
gorgeous Machesa gown.
Fantastic feathered detail along empire waist and beautiful drape
shows off Jessica's beautiful baby bump.
photo/Frederick
M. Brown/Getty
Katherine Heigl: It's
curves and more curves for Katherine in this insanely HOT Escada
dress. The perfect combination of modern meets old Hollywood
glamour. She seems to win us over time and time again.
BIGGEST MESS
photo/Jeff
Vespa/wireimage.com
Hilda Swinton: One
word: creepy. It's dark, frightening, and a
little vampress. And the single sleeve
completely throws off the look. An off-the-shoulder redesign would be
quite an improvement. Yikes to this one!
photo/Steve
Granitz/wireimage.com
Marion Cottillard: Love
it or hate it...a tremendous amount of painstaking work went into
the making of this dress. Nevertheless, this blinding scaly number by Jean Paul Gaultier
belongs in the sea and far from the Red
Carpet.
Thursday Feb 21, 2008
Ask the Stylist
Q: I love wearing dresses, but
have a little bit of a tummy. What style would you
suggest I purchase for Spring?
M.A. St. Paul, MN
A: Empire waisted and trapeze style
dresses are perfect for de-emphasizing that area. All-over prints
are also helpful in distributing the
focus from one particular problem spot on your body. This
fantastic Milly
dress defines your shape, has a great banded empire waist to draw
the attention up top and away from your tummy. And the
striking print is perfectly in-trend for the Spring season.
Another option would be this darling trapeze 'Gathered
Drape Dress'. This style is nipped in the rib
cage to give more definition, has beautiful feminine draping along
the neckline, and is finished with a stunning floral knitted
racerback detail. Add glam jewelry and this style is
instantly evening ready or simply Summer chic when worn with flat
sandals.

2008 Grammy Awards Red Carpet: Best and
Biggest Mess
It was the music industry's biggest night
and we were ready to be blown away. Unfortunately, this
year's Red Carpet fell seriously short of spectacular with less
hits and many, many more misses.
First, we believe that " if you ain't
got nothin' good to say, don't say it at all". But
when it comes to the Red Carpet, there's just no holding
back. So fashion darlings, forgive us...it's not you-it's
what you're wearing that makes us cringe. And for the
fabulous few who got it right, we applaud you!
This
year's BEST

Fergie: Just splendid
and ultra-sexy in this yummy yellow strapless dress by Calvin
Klein. She knows how to work those curves.
photo/people.com
Faith Hill: Divine
from head-to-toe. This Valentino
number may be more appropriate for the Oscars, but exquisite
nonetheless. Loved the asymmetrical shoulder, fishtail hem
and gorgeous jeweled drop earrings.

Ne-Yo: Our best
dressed male of the night! R&B artist Ne-Yo charmed the
Red Carpet in a fresh fedora and refined suit with modern detailing along lapels. And
with a smile so bright...who can resist?
BIGGEST
MESS
photo/jillscott.com
Jill Scott: Winning
her 3rd Grammy, Jill Scott had every reason to celebrate.
But her dress caused quite a distraction. This silver
metallic number succeeded in design, but failed horribly with
cheap stripper-ish material. And the glaring sheen did
nothing to flatter her figure.

Mazur/wireimage.com
Beyonce: Looked
more Ice Queen from the movie Narnia in this sky blue silver
metallic beaded dress by Elie Saab. And the jagged iced bracelet-just too much.
"On-the-Fence"
Notables:
Carrie Underwood: In
a plunging multi-purple floral gown by Zuhair
Murad. The dress embraced this season's floral
trend, but looked way too busy on the Red Carpet. And
she could have done without the embellished lavender clutch.
Possibly a cream or metallic version would be a better choice.
Alicia Keys: Gorgeous
sapphire halter gown by Armani Prive.
But her bizarre mohawk style up-do and football shaped clutch
diverted from what could have been sheer fabulousness. A
great example of how the wrong accessories can overwhelm a
fantastic ensemble.
Thankfully, Alicia's
performance more than made up for her Red Carpet blunder.
And despite Amy Winehouse's rehab troubles, the brilliant Grammy
winner captivated the crowd with an unbelievable performance.

2008 Grammy Awards: Red Carpet
This Sunday, myself along with millions
will be glued to the tube to watch the 50th Annual Grammy Awards.
And you know what that means...it's live from the Red Carpet!
It's incredible music and fabulous celebrity styles at it's
best!
Past hottie artists who ruled the Red
Carpet: Carrie Underwood, Rihanna, Beyonce, Fergie, Alicia
Keys, and favorite male artist Justin Timberlake.
Check back next week for a recap on the
BEST and BIGGEST MESS at this year's Grammys.

Ask the Stylist
Q: I need a special dress for
Valentine's Day, but don't want anything too short. And I
have no curves at all! Any ideas? Thanks for your
help! A.J. Minneapolis, MN
A: It's important to find
something that will enhance your shape. The most flattering
styles for you would be the shift dress or styles that will define
your waist. And a "LRD" (little red dress) would
be the obvious choice. But this Valentine's day, surprise
him in dark pink with this Yoana
Baraschi dress. The color embraces this season's
bright bold trend, petal collar detail offers a feminine and
romantic touch, and ribbon tie adds definition to your
shape. A printed shift dress also looks modern and sweet for
the occasion. I love this Chetta
B dress and it's the perfect choice for the Spring
season. And you can't go wrong with a "LBD".
Dance the night away in a fabulous trapeze dress from White
House Black Market. This style is so sexy and
flirty and shape gives the illusion of curves.

Look Who's Wearing
Admit it. Your favorite celeb is
wearing the cutest pair of heels, donned in the hottest jacket or
carrying the most fabulous bag this season...and you're dying to
know.
This morning, we spotted Hollywood
"it" girl, Mary-Kate Olsen all snug in her "Inhibit
Stripe Scarf" recently posted in our blog.

Here she is at the Sundance
Film Festival in Park City, Utah looking casually chic wrapped in her
scarf and sporting a very cheery yellow Dior
by John Galliano bag. For those who have to have it,
this bag is currently unavailable in stores. But you can
still get
you celeb style on with this oh-so-lush purple
delight.

Ask the Stylist
Q: For years I've been asking
my husband to throw out his old jeans. I'd like to see him
in something more hip and trendy. Where can I find a nice
pair for under $100? C.P. Blaine, MN
A: Perfect fit jeans are a
wardrobe staple. And premiums styles can get
pricey. Fortunately for us, the perfect pair is
available for just under $100. Look for styles with modern
detailing such as whiskering and fraying at the hemlines.
This pair from Banana
Republic has an easy, cool updated look and is perfect
for day or night. And tall guys, you're in luck.
Lengths as long as 36" are also available online. For
an edgier look, try these Lucky
Brand Flapper Bootleg jeans (on sale). Fantastic
for a night
on the town. These jeans have just the right amount of
distressing and fresh detailing on back flap pockets.

Q: I'm in my 30's and want an
updated look for work. Currently, I wear a lot of pants and
would like to try skirts. What pieces should I
buy? E.W. Minneapolis, MN
A: It depends on your office
dress code. But for most, "business casual" attire
is appropriate. I would suggest purchasing quality separates
including cardigans (big trend this season), medium-weight
sweaters, and pencil or A-line skirts (flattering for all).
Also, look for printed tops and blouses to modernize the look. Try
layering the cardigan with a printed blouse, pencil skirt and
finished with patent leather pumps . To accentuate your
curves, cinch it with a fabulous textured leather belt.

Loosely wrapped, looped, knotted or tied

needed punch to all neutral winter wardrobes. Here are some
of our top picks:

Luxurious and so versatile,
this Inhabit

Ask the Stylist
Q: I have smaller hips and
have trouble finding work pants that fit well. Any
suggestions? Thanks! M.R. Minneapolis, MN
A: Your trouble may be in the
pant rise. A lower rise will prevent gapping through the hips and
create more shape for your not-so-curvy figure. Also look for
details like slant pockets to create volume and overall proportion
to your line. Ann
Taylor Loft has a great selection in styles and
cuts including petite sizes. And most pants will run under
$90. For designers styles, try the Theory
'Max C-Tailor' Pant found at most department
stores. This style is cut slim through the hips, thighs and
perfect for your shape.

2008 Golden Globes: What the
Industry Wore
As stagnant as last week's People's Choice
Awards were, there was no chance I was going to watch the Golden
Globe awards announcements. So I thought. Who was I
really kidding? Sunday nights aren't exactly high on the
social calendar. Even with the lack of a Red Carpet, there
still had to be some fabulous fashions to dish about, right?
For those who attended the mini Golden
Globes ceremony held at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills,
California...the official dress code was "business
attire". So far from glamorous, but there were a few
notables worn by some of Hollywood's hot insiders.
photo/enewsonline.com
E! News' Giuliana
Rancic wore a classic black
sheath dress with cap sleeves topped with a glamorous
jewel encrusted belt. On Extras Dayna Devon, an
exquisite curve-hugging, waist-defining Black
and White Silk Top Contrast Dress by BCBG Max Azria.
It had the look of a blouse and pencil skirt all in one
seriously divine dress-the perfect choice for her amazing, new
mommy figure. And one more notable not pictured...Shaun
Robinson of Access Hollywood in an elegant Black
Halo Satin 'Jackie' Dress. The same dress has
been seen on other cutie celebs like Kelly Ripa and "Ms
Hot Pot" Kim Kardashian.
And if you were wondering
about the big winner of last night's Golden Globe Awards...Johnny
Depp in Sweeney Todd for "Actor, Musical or
Comedy" and "Picture, Musical or Comedy". No
surprise there. Just bring back the shows please!
Hollywood and The Golden Globes just aren't the same without the
glam fashions. After all, isn't that what it's all
about?

Ask the Stylist
Q: I'm looking for a great
everyday purse for under $500. Do you have any
recommendations? K.A. Eden Prairie, MN
A: Everyday bags should be at
least medium-sized and very well constructed. It needs
to be large enough to fit all your goods and can handle the daily
wear and tear. One of my favorite designers is Cole
Haan. Quality is superior and styles are modern
yet timeless and will last for years. The Aerin
Medium Tote is my pick for it's fine semi-glazed
leather and chic polished brass hardware. Two locations in
town: The Galleria in Edina and Gaviidae Common
Minneapolis. Marc by Marc Jacobs is
another personal favorite. It's high-end fashion for less
and always on trend. Check out Nordstrom at MOA for
the latest styles.
A Mexican getaway, St. Lucia, Bahamas
anyone? January is the month to get away and get some much
needed R&R. And designers are ready with fabulous
resortwear styles to liven your spirits with crisp whites and
bright vibrant colors.
They were all over the runways for
Spring...hot pinks, kelly greens, eye-popping yellows, electric
blues and bold
oranges. The idea is to make those whites pop with a jolt of
color. And a fabulous way to incorporate the trend into your
vacation look-yummy colored sandals!
Still hot for Spring is patent
leather. Tory Burch has a splendid selection including this Ali
Banana Yellow Patent Sandal. Great low heel and
minimal gold-tone logo detail.

Hot, hot, hot! In a sexy
t-strap style with fabulous fuschia snakeskin leather and
silver-tone hardware. These Charles
by Charles David heels are a vacation must!

These lush Hollywould
sandals are a tropical island gem. From an afternoon of
browsing to dinner on the beach-you won't want to take them
off!
